Alongside the classic NES version of Tetris, its 1998 remaster from the Game Boy Color era is now playable on Nintendo Switch.

If you’re not keen on buying Tetris Forever and only want to experience the original classic, Tetris for the NES is now on Nintendo Switch Online. However, Tetris DX is also available to subscribers.

As a remaster of Tetris, available in 1998 for the Game Boy Color, Tetris DX received acclaim from critics and fans. It adds the classic Marathon mode, where players clear lines for as long as possible and two new modes – Ultra and 40 Lines. The former provides a three-minute time limit and tasks you with earning the most points before it runs out.

The latter only gives you 40 lines to clear with the twist of doing so as quickly as possible. You can also play against the CPU and, best of all, save your high scores to the battery, a novelty at the time.

Check out the release trailer below, with creator Alexey Pajitnov offering his thoughts on the titles and how the fans contributed to their success.

The original NES Tetris is also coming to Nintendo Switch Online, while a new Maximum Cup event has also been announced for Tetris 99.

Tetris fans, rejoice. Celebrating the legendary game’s 40th anniversary, at its recent Partner Direct Showcase, Nintendo and developer Digital Eclipse announced Tetris Forever, a new game that will celebrate the history of Tetris.

Tetris Forever will include over 15 different classic Tetris games from over the years, including the original NES release, as well as a new one called Tetris Time Warp, which, as its name suggests, will see players jumping from one game style to the next. In addition, Tetris Forever will also feature over an hour of new documentary footage detailing the history of Tetris.

Tetris Forever is due out for the Nintendo Switch this year, with a specific release date currently unannounced- though it isn’t the only Tetris release for players to look forward to.

Nintendo has announced that the original NES Tetris is also going to be available at no additional cost to all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers this winter. Additionally, this winter will also bring a new Maximum Cup event for Tetris 99, featuring the original NES title.

Some people take video games too seriously. Meet those who take it way further.

We’ve all spent an absurd amount of time playing video games. Some of us may look back at those 100 hours playing Skyrim and Persona 5 and wonder about our dedication. However, there are others who take that dedication even further. Sometimes, it even goes off the deep end of sanity. Let’s look at 15 times where gamers took their video games too far.

Multiple WoW Characters, One Player, All Achievements – Ataxus

You may have heard of Ataxius, Ataxas, Ataxus, Ataxxus, Ataxa and so on (three of those sound like the same name but trust us, they’re different). These World of Warcraft characters managed to hit the top 5 rankings in the MMO at some point. Lest you think they’re just the same guild, they’re actually controlled by the exact same person. Using multiboxing, this single person managed to control all five at once and got all 1954 achievements with each one. If it weren’t obvious already, this is a task that took years of work.

Okay, so movies based on video games are a thing now. We’ve already had the successful adaptations of Tomb Raider or Resident Evil to the big screen, for example, and we have more incoming, with Assassin’s Creed getting a high profile movie adaptation some time in 2016. So that’s well and good, right?

Sort of? It’s also been confirmed that one of the highest selling games of all time will be made into a movie. To which you say, well, duh. The catch? Said highest selling game is- Tetris. Yes, that Tetris. The one with the falling blocks and the iconic tune. It’s being made into a movie.

To make matters even more hilarious, said movie will be an epic science fiction movie. I don’t know how any of that will work, since Tetris is as pure a game as they come, with no storyline, no mythos, just pure gameplay, but, I mean… I guess… no, there’s no way I can see the other side of the coin on this one, guys.

The Tetris Company seems to be pretty darn confident, though.

“What started as a simple, computer puzzle game 30 years ago, today is part of our global consciousness, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds and feeding our innate desire to create order out of chaos. We look forward to partnering with Threshold Entertainment to re-imagine that common experience and bring a spectacular new Tetris universe to the big screen for the first time. In this new universe, as you’ll soon find out, there’s much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines.”

No, dudes. There isn’t.

Ubisoft is working with The Tetris Company to bring the classic puzzle title to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network respectively. This is to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary, a period of which it managed to sell hundreds of millions of units and make its way across 50 platforms worldwide since launching in 1984.

Henk B. Rogers, managing director of The Tetris Company, stated that, “We welcome Ubisoft to the Tetris family. I am 100% sure they will develop one of the best versions of the Tetris game ever.”

Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft co-founder and CEO, was also enthusiastic about the deal. “We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans.”

As of now, no solid release date has been provided but would you pick up Tetris for your next gen console? Let us know in the comments.

Tetris manager, Henk Rogers says Angry Birds is a fad, and he has his reasons for it. I won’t say much but check out what he has to say. He mentioned these in an interview with Industry Gamers.

“Angry Birds is cute and everybody plays it for a while but they get burned out and move on and they will play another game,” he said.

“Any time you have a character like an Angry Birds character, the games that have those as their central theme, they become popular and then they go away. Tetris has outlasted so many of those games, we’ve been around for 25 years.

“Again I like to compare it to a sport, in the beginning it’s an activity, like golf was an activity, then it became a sport. I think once people have played it more than 20 or 25 years you can say it’s here to stay, it’s a sport, it’s no longer a fad.

“But Tetris is like Happy Birthday, it keeps on going. Everybody else has games that come and go, they make the hit parade, but these are all temporary.

“You have to work really hard to get your unknown game to be #1, but when we re-released Tetris it became #1 even though we didn’t do any marketing. We have an unfair advantage, I gotta say. I’d rather have the goose that lays the golden egg.”

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
