Guard Crush's acclaimed beat 'em up finally arrives for Xbox, but you can also look forward to Disco Elysium and The Long Dark.

The second wave of Game Pass for March has been revealed, and in case you thought Microsoft couldn’t top the addition of Cyberpunk 2077, think again. It kicks off on March 18th with South of Midnight and The Alters becoming available on Game Pass Premium for cloud, console and PC players. Things quickly escalate on March 19th with the arrival of Disco Elysium: The Final Cut for all three tiers.

On March 24th, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will finally be added to the service for Ultimate, Premium and PC subscribers. Guard Crush Games’ Absolum follows on March 25th, which also marks the acclaimed rogue-lite beat ’em up’s debut on Xbox Series X/S.

Nova Roma, a city-building title from Lion Shield, will premiere in Game Preview for Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, coinciding with its early access release. Survival crafting fans can look forward to The Long Dark becoming available on March 30th for Premium, PC, and Ultimate. Finally, Resident Evil 7: biohazard will be playable on March 31st, joining the Resident Evil Village.

But wait, there’s more. Barbie Horse Trails kicks off next month alongside Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the latter finally available to Premium subscribers. If that wasn’t enough, Square Enix’s march to include every single mainline Final Fantasy title on Game Pass seemingly continues with Final Fantasy 4 on April 7th.

Surprisingly, only two games will be leaving the service on March 31st. Check them out below:

Peppa Pig World Adventures (Cloud, Console, PC)

Mad Streets (Cloud, Console, PC)

If you're looking for your next big PC title, we've lined up some of this year's best ones for you to check out. Each one of them's a winner, and definitely worth a shot.

It’s been a good year for PC games, with some great experiences hitting the shelves. However, as is the case every year, some of them have been better than the others, managing to stand out enough to gain the notice of the community at large.

We’ve played them all, and picked our favorites to give you a few choices for the holidays and beyond as we wait for a new batch of great games from 2026. As it stands, our nominees for the best PC games of 2025 are:

1. INAZUMA ELEVEN: Victory Road

Intense football RPG action with a layer of anime polish can be quite appealing to either an anime or a football fan, but this one is more than that. It offers an almost endless amount of playable content thanks to a massive roster of characters, and a lot of replay value thanks to its single and multiplayer modes. There’s a lot to enjoy here, and a very rewarding journey along the way.

2. Dispatch

Joining Robert Robinson III on this charming and often hilarious take on superheroes is sure to have you very invested in its story and mechanics right off the bat. Dispatch hits all the right notes and brings a charming cast to the stage, while a riveting narrative weaves their lives together with the SDN acting as a binding thread. It captures your attention and manages to hold it long enough for this one to become endearing.

3. Hades 2

We always knew the long wait for this one was going to be worth it. Hades 2 is an absolute blast with its roguelike action-RPG gameplay loop, blending very well with its story and unique art style. Its potent combination of style, substance, and satire is sublime, while the combat does come with enough challenge to keep you on your toes. Look no further than this one for hours of quality fun.

4. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered

If you haven’t gotten around to this one after playing the first game, or perhaps coming to the franchise after the live-action shows, this one is definitely going to have you invested. The remaster does a brilliant job of improving on the strengths of the original release, making it the best possible way to experience the adventure that awaits. For those of you already familiar with how it all ends, another playthrough is always on the cards anyway.

5. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Every hour you sink into this action-packed JRPG is going to be worth it, with its story, characters, combat, and general allure drawing you in and leaving you with so much to do in its world. It’s also very replayable, which is a great way to keep the story going and your characters’ stories playing out on increasingly harder difficulties. This one does its genre justice and is a world that calls to you at every turn.

6. Absolum

With a combat system worthy of a chef’s kiss, accompanied by a roguelike gameplay loop that’s very addictive indeed, Talamh is a place you might find pretty hard to leave. The battle against the Crimson Order and Azra is the perfect excuse for some good old beat ‘em up action, and this one is excellent on that front. Between all the character archetypes on offer, it’s probably going to keep you busy for a while.

7. Clair Obscur Expedition

This one’s already winning quite a few awards and nominations, and with good reason. The Continent and Expedition’s beloved cast of characters are reason enough to fall in love with The Paintress’s world. But all of the adversity and loss they have overcome have you invested in the entire journey. It’s almost as if you’re a part of the expedition too, and the one who decides its fate. It’s an experience that comes along every once in a while to show you what a great game can do.

8. Hollow Knight: Silksong

This one’s release was among the year’s most pleasant surprises, and taking over a new adventure as Hornet was an absolute treat. The combat was familiar yet fresh, while the explorable world’s size and scope were overwhelming at first, and simply delightful as we kept losing ourselves in its confines. Add a very enticing art style and excellent level designs, and you’ve got yourself a winner.

9. Blue Prince

This is among the more unique ones on this list. Helping Simon secure his inheritance of the Mt. Holly Estate might not be the most action-packed game on this list, but it certainly stretches your mental faculties in your quest to locate the mansion’s hidden room. No two days are alike, and you’re soon going to be thinking about this one even when you’re not in your gaming chair.

10. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Oh, what an RPG this one turned out to be. With a massive map full of quirky folks, mysteries, intrigue, and some good old adventures to be had along the road, it was a sequel that stayed true to its roots while building out the franchise in a number of meaningful ways. The story is top-shelf, while an abundance of things to do is going to keep you quite busy as you play it all.

11. ARC Raiders

This extraction shooter has been among the few games we’ve visited almost daily, not because we had to, but because we wanted to. It’s been the perfect choice for a quick session where we kick back, and set out to meet other players in a world where the community has now made identifying friends from foes a part of the fun. Its design lends itself to the chaos that such decisions can cause, and you’re going to have a lot of unpredictably fun moments with this one.

12. Assassin’s Creed Shadows

With a perfect blend of the samurai and shinobi’s ways, and a massive recreation of feudal Japan to let those two archetypes loose in, Shadows is a great addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Naoe and Yasuke are great characters, their skillsets lending themselves to some very interesting ways to achieve your goals. A stunning world and protagonists whose blades could strike from the shadows or the light is certainly an adventure worth having.

13. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

Cloud Strife’s fight against the Shinra is the perfect backdrop for an explosive story, combined with some incredible gameplay mechanics that make this one’s long-awaited PC version worth playing even if you’re not a fan of Final Fantasy. We’d recommend hooking up a DualSense to your PC for this one to get the most out of its haptic integration, while enjoying all of the visual bells and whistles that it has to offer. It’s the best of both worlds, really.

14. Monster Hunter Wilds

Beautiful biomes, a wide variety of impeccably designed monsters to hunt, and a plethora of quests to keep you travelling across the Forbidden Lands make this one a fine choice for those of you looking for a meaty RPG. Excellent build variety and deep combat mechanics, along with a charming world full of things to pique your curiosity, are more reasons to jump in and enjoy yourself thoroughly.

15. Lumines Arise

Simple mechanics can often lead to complex gameplay loops, and Lumines Ares is a great example of that. No two rounds of this puzzle game are the same, and it takes the concept of Tetris to a whole new level with a very unique visual design and audio design that weaves itself into the game’s DNA quite creatively. This one’s impressive and addictive, which is quite a potent combo.

16. Battlefield 6

Among the year’s best looking shooters, Battlefield 6 might have drawn a bit of flak for its campaign, but that does not take away from the fact that its shooting mechanics are very much on point. If you’re looking for a multiplayer shooter that shows off what your PC can do while also being a great option for those extended gaming sessions, this one has everything you need and more.

17. The Alters

If a game that has you creating alternate versions of yourself to progress further in its story sounds cool to you, you’re in luck. Jan Dolski’s story might seem quirky on the surface, but there’s a surprising amount of depth on offer here, and your choices carry a lot of weight in the bargain. This one’s among the most creative titles we’ve played this year, and is going to remain among the most unique ones we’ve encountered over the years.

18. The First Berserker: Khazan

Khazan’s revenge-fuelled rampage is a stylish, well-designed game that puts its combat front and center and challenges you to play it on its terms before it gives you the satisfaction you crave from a title of its calibre. With an interesting story and characters backing up the action, along with a distinct visual style to sell it all, this one is going to have you white knuckled as you take on its many threats.

19. Bionic Bay

Atmospheric, immersive, and mentally challenging, Bionic Bay makes excellent use of a solid premise to give you an experience that’s going to have you wanting more. It’s a test of your patience just as much as it’s a test of your ability to get creative with solutions to the problem in front of you. It’s exhilarating when you get it right, while the way it all comes together is a reward on its own with this one.

20. Jurassic World Evolution 3

With Jeff Goldblum coming back to the fold as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and a very encouraging approach to setting you up for success as you manage your dinosaurs and facilities, this one gets you locked in pretty quickly. We still go back to our parks for some routine maintenance from time to time, watching the dinosaurs we’ve helped bring to life thrive. It’s quite relaxing and a lot of fun until Extinction Now rears its ugly head.

And there you have it. These are the PC games from 2025 we think deserve your attention. But there has to be a winner, right? We’ve an inkling you already know what’s coming.

The winner of the best PC game in 2025 is

Clair Obscur: Expedition

Clair Obscur: Expedition , a game that has surpassed expectations and goes above and beyond to enthrall its players.

Its visual style lends it realism while leaving room for artistic flourishes. Its cast of characters sells its material so well that you find yourself even rooting for its antagonist. You’re going to be humming its soundtrack and maybe even listening to it in the gym. Its story is going to take you to places you might not be ready to visit. Its combat might fool you into thinking it’s an easy experience with no challenge involved. In short, it’s everything a great game should be, and is one that’s going to remain close to our hearts in the years to come.

And that’s a wrap on the best PC games of 2025! We’re looking forward to doing it all over again next year, and to keep bringing more of gaming’s best to your screens.

We believe that a game doesn't have to break the bank to be considered good, and it looks like there are a lot of developers out there who feel the same way.

The sub-50 USD price point has been quite an attractive option for a number of video game studios in recent times. We have seen quite a few releases that are not too hard on your wallet while delivering some excellent value in the process.

Many of these titles could have been a lot more expensive considering the unique experiences they brought to the table. However, in a world where there are quite a few substandard titles at much higher price points, these titles stand out as shining beacons for gamers looking to enjoy solid games at reasonable prices.

With that in mind, here are a few amazing games that are currently priced at under 50 USD at the time of writing this article.

1. Clair Obscur: Expedition

Clair Obscur earns its place on this list with its poignant, riveting , beautiful visuals, entertaining gameplay, and a soundtrack filled with tracks that you will hum long after you’ve powered down your gaming system. It’s the complete package and a love letter to RPG fans from Sandfall Interactive.

2. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

It’s been a couple of weeks since Wuchang: Fallen Feathers hit the shelves, and it has more than earned its reputation as a solid Soulslike title that doesn’t break the bank while offering a lot to do in its gorgeous world.

Bai Wuchang’s single-minded determination to save her sister quickly evolves into a deadly Feathering disease that acts as a catalyst for some truly magnificent boss fights that will keep you on your toes for hours on end.

Pick this one up if you want a deadly world full of challenges to take on and secrets to tease out.

3. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Enhanced Edition

Ninja Theory’s cinematic work of art continues the story of Senua from its 2017 predecessor. It does so with aplomb, blending absolutely stunning visuals with a gritty, dark take on psychosis and unhealed trauma that is not only mature, but also quite poignant.

With incredibly designed levels, excellent voice acting from a talented cast, and a story that can haunt you long after you roll the credits on it, Senua’s PS5 debut is a title worthy of your time despite a rather bland approach to its puzzles and combat.

This is a game you must experience at least once.

4. Shadow Labyrinth

Pac-Man’s latest outing is Bandai Namco at its finest. Joined by the mysterious Swordsman #8, Pac-Man (or Puck) attempts to escape his prison in a mysterious world while uncovering the truth about events that put him there in the first place.

With a very unique art style, challenging exploration and combat, an interesting story full of references to other Bandai Namco franchises, and even its own backdoor pilot on Amazon Prime’s Secret Level, this is a game that’s entertaining and fun to play.

Just know that there’s a learning curve to its mechanics and combat, and you’re good to go.

5. Robocop Rogue City Unfinished Business

In the mood to just let loose and shoot some bad guys in the face? Robocop Rogue City: Unfinished Business packs everything that was good about the 2023 title into a condensed, fast-paced package that explores Alex’s origin story while pitting him against a villain who has quite the chip on his shoulder in the present.

Controlling Robocop is a lot of fun and is an excellent power trip for fans of the character’s deadpan line delivery and his views on serving up justice to those who need it. It helps that the story races along from start to finish, giving Robocop reasons and new ways to take down any who stands between him and his quarry.

Time to put the Auto 9 to good use!

6. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

Team Ninja grabs another spot on this list with its remake of the 2008 classic. Ryu Hayabusa is a force to be reckoned with in the field of battle, not hesitating to dismember his enemies in order to negate the threat they present. The game’s story is nothing to scoff at either, and can be quite entertaining depending on your taste.

With its upgraded visuals and a very solid gameplay loop, this remake is definitely worth checking out and is a steal at under $50 USD.

7. The Alters

This survival game from 11 Bit Studios has been making waves since it released in June 2025 on account of a very unique premise and a gameplay loop that can quickly have you hooked. Jan Dolski’s reality-bending adventure, in which he creates alternate versions of himself in order to achieve his goals, is a lot of fun and also has a lot of replay value with multiple endings to the adventure.

The Alters stands out from the crowd and could have you sinking many hours into it once you get invested in its bizarre premise and novel mechanics.

8. Blue Prince

Blending strategy, puzzle-solving, and roguelike elements, Dogubomb and Raw Fury’s effort to create an experience like no other has largely paid off. Simon’s efforts to secure his inherited mansion by finding a hidden room within are a marvellous tale filled with compelling mysteries that are both challenging and rewarding in equal measures.

With only two rooms in the mansion remaining constant from day to day, navigating this maze is sure to win you over as you try to find ways to tease out the secrets it is trying to hide.

If you’re looking for a game that has you grinning to yourself even as you scratch your head in confusion, look no further than Blue Prince.

9. Mafia: The Old Country

Hangar 13’s return to the Mafia’s roots is sure to entertain and delight you with beautiful visuals and a gameplay loop that takes the best of the franchise’s past titles and adds in a story that sees its Sicilian protagonist join hands with the titular organization at a time when it was only beginning to spread its wings.

Authentic recreations of early Sicily and a story that is bound to feature the franchise’s traditional twists and turns could make this a game that can soon become one that you find quite hard to put down.

10. Split Fiction

Mio and Zoe’s efforts to save their hard work from the hands of a greedy corporation takes them on an adventure in which their respective imaginations place them in worlds that draw from the best of pop culture while being a very entertaining game all on its own.

The two writers’ budding friendship permeates the gameplay loop on offer, and Split Fiction is best enjoyed playing split-screen co-op with a friend. It’s the perfect game for buddies who just want to chill out on the couch and take on a game that doesn’t demand too much from them while managing to entertain them too.

11. Ready or Not

Like Split Fiction, Ready or Not is best enjoyed with friends. Unlike Split Fiction, it is not meant to be a relaxing game. Judge’s crusade against crime takes him and his team to places in which the stakes are high, and even a single mistake could mean that lives are lost.

Ready or Not is a demanding game that requires you to be on your toes and ready to improvise based on what’s waiting for you around the next corner. However, for those of you who are up to the challenge, this is a game that could be the centerpiece of many co-op sessions in which you and your team can truly work together to dominate.

12. Elden Ring Nightreign

Another one that should be enjoyed with your friends, although it’s quite easy to just dive into a run with total strangers, Elden Ring Nightreign marks FromSoftware’s successful debut in the roguelike genre. You control one of eight Nightfarers with unique abilities, tearing across the land of Limveld in search of the Nightlords.

With unique stories for each Nightfarer, and a host of incredible bosses from Elden Ring and the Dark Souls franchise, Nightreign is a perfect title to dive into after a long day for a fun time collecting gear, upgrades, and of course, taking down imposing threats with your team in tow.

13. The Midnight Walk

This fascinating take on finding the light even in the most crushing darkness is a simple, fun, and very entertaining adventure. It’s a story told over five chapters, each of which examines how light and darkness could essentially be two sides of the same coin, neither being able to exist without the other.

The Burnt One and Potboy’s combined adventure is a tale that you won’t want to miss, while the unique art style and excellent level designs keep you coming back for more.

14. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

Returning to Cyrodiil after all this time is going to be a huge draw for Elder Scrolls fans. Even if you haven’t been in touch with one of modern gaming’s most iconic franchises, Oblivion Remastered is a perfect opportunity to see what the fuss is about.

It’s a game in which you could truly get lost in, putting off the main campaign for as long as you like as you soak in the sights with its new Unreal Engine 5 makeover, while all of the side content and DLC of the original is now right there at your fingertips. Taking on The Mythic Dawn is a sure-fire way to keep you entertained for hours on end.

15. Days Gone Remastered

Deacon John’s melancholic tale of survival in a world gone horribly wrong continues to be a solid experience made even better by a remaster that brought some current-gen goodness to the table, making this the definitive way to take on hordes of terrifying zombies and living to tell the tale.

Just hopping on your motorcycle and cruising along in the game’s vast open world until something catches your attention is a viable way to enjoy this game, and is perhaps the best way to experience all it has to offer. Just be ready for its story to pull at your heartstrings along the way.

And that’s a wrap on our list of titles that are easy on your wallet but fairly challenging to get through fully. There’s a lot of value on offer in each of them, and if you’re looking for a new game to sink your teeth into, any one of these beauties will do!

Delays, cancellations, and disappointments mar this year, but despite it all, these titles stand as the very best so far.

2025 has been many things so far – the year that Silksong still hasn’t launched in. The year that Grand Theft Auto 6 got delayed out of. The year where everyone rightfully hates Microsoft leadership. But it’s also delivered, perhaps unexpectedly, some of the best games ever made. From bold new RPGs to familiar franchises and more than a few incredible sequels, it’s been a stellar year thus far. Here are 15 of the best single player games that stand out.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

With the disappointment surrounding Starfield and the hype and concern over The Elder Scrolls 6, I never imagined that Bethesda would revisit Oblivion as it did: retaining the core gameplay with Gamebryo but overhauling the visuals with Unreal Engine 5. Perhaps more surprising is how well the adventure holds up, both narratively and in gameplay, though the numerous quality-of-life changes (hurray for leveling that makes sense) certainly help. Now, if only Virtuos and Bethesda could fix the various issues on PC.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Few games this year have really left a mark like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and I don’t just mean that in terms of the story, its characters, its gorgeous aesthetics, or even its utterly broken builds that even enemies with 100 times the health can’t stand up to. I’m talking about revisiting the incredible soundtrack where every song fits and sounds amazing (“Rain From the Ground” on repeat). I’m talking about marvelling at areas that I hadn’t even seen or heard of to date. And most of all, I’m talking about seeing others’ reactions to the best moments, just to relive it all over again.

The Alters

A game that embodies the sensation of, “I hate Jan, can’t stand Jan,” then smash-cutting to me and my bestie, Jan. Except Jan is many and also yourself, but also your crew that needs to band together and ensure survival by fleeing a killer sun via a giant circular base. If that doesn’t sell you on The Alters, then the act of witnessing different Jans of fictitious walks of life coming together and either imploding, enduring, or everything in between should.

Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist

Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist doesn’t completely overhaul the core of Ender Lilies, instead throwing players into a different setting afflicted by the Rain of Death. Nevertheless, it’s impossible to ignore its most compelling changes and improvements, whether it’s the Homunculus customization or their very characterization. Tying it all together is yet another fantastic soundtrack by Mili, stellar art direction and incredible boss fights.

DOOM: The Dark Ages

Rip, tear and…shield bash until it’s done? DOOM: The Dark Ages didn’t deliver on all the beats I wanted, but with its gameplay, id Software fulfilled its goal for a new experience while channeling the greatness of the contemporary titles. Rapid weapon switching and aerial shenanigans are out; parrying attacks while bouncing the Shield Saw off multiple enemies, exploding shields, and bullying a Cyberdemon with rapid Chainshots is in. The slick level design and pacing keep the action flowing, as you itch for the next big battle.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Henry’s come to see us and delivered one of the best role-playing games of the year. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 improves on the original in all the expected ways – progression, combat, visuals, etc – but the quest design and immersion are on another level. There are far more choices for outcomes with so much influencing the main story path, and the extensive range of build choices is beaten only by the sheer amount of things to see and discover. Sure, there are the usual bugs, but by and large, it showcases the limits that some developers can break through to deliver a truly endearing RPG experience.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

Tempting as it is to consider this “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth – Majima Edition,” Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii distinguishes itself in various other ways. Amnesia does little to hinder everyone’s favorite gangster, who obtains a pirate ship and crew and sails the waters, engaging in naval combat and plundering. Even the combat, making a well-worn return to real-time, thrives with new jumping attacks, summons, and the Cutlass style. Add in RGG Studio’s usual assortment of side content, and this will keep completionists busy for some time.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

Eschewing a centralized location with all its back-alleys and varied stories creeping within its structures for a wider system and multiple companions, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector nevertheless maintains its role-playing narrative focus. Whether you decide to push your luck on jobs, delve into your crewmates’ pasts or settle your own scores, the weight of each decision feels beyond a simple dice roll and speech check and more like an extension – and consequence – of your own character.

Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut

Is this technically a port of a 2015 title with a few added story scenes and an online PvE mode with optional co-op? Yes, but it’s also Yakuza 0, which many consider the best game in the franchise. The origins of Kazuma Kiryu and how he became the famed Dragon of Dojima, and the story of Majima Goro before his Mad Dog status are framed against late 80s Japan with its unique fashions and overinflated land prices. Each side story felt compelling and memorable – nearly every corner felt like it offered something new – and it’s all backed by stellar combat and storytelling.

Bionic Bay

Some of Bionic Bay’s monochromatic visuals and platforming might initially remind you of Limbo, but the reality is more…tenuous. Set in the ruins of a biomechanical civilization, survival is just as much about swapping places and manipulating gravity as it is about controlling time and desperately avoiding projectiles. The surreal environments belie an intriguing setting while the gameplay keeps you guessing.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

Out of nowhere, Team Ninja showed up and announced that Ninja Gaiden was back. However, it also dropped Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, with improved visuals and quality-of-life changes but the same brutal combat (that too with ample gore). We could debate endlessly on how it’s still not the definitive version of the original and how Sigma’s influence still lingers. And yet, as a throwback to simpler hack-and-slash times with challenging difficulty and masterful combat, it was everything we could ever want.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Speaking of throwbacks, Dynasty Warriors: Origins redeemed the series, casting it out of its long-running rut by doing the obvious: Going back to its roots. That means big 1v100 battles and no open-world mechanics alongside an original protagonist and a different perspective on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Granted, there’s no traditional free mode where you can play as any of your companions without restrictions, but as a clean slate, with each weapon class feeling distinct and the presentation going above and beyond previous titles, it’s a marked improvement.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The dust will probably never settle on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but it still stands as one of the more compelling action RPG entries in the franchise. On top of the gorgeous depiction of Japan, the stealth and parkour are wonderfully expanded, finally fulfilling the ninja fantasy that so many AC fans have wanted for years. That combat feels significantly expanded and more responsive, with Naoe and Yasuke offering different compelling options, which also doesn’t hurt.

Lies of P: Overture

Overture does what any good Souls-like expansion should do – humble you. Sometimes it was a little too effective (necessitating some adjustments), but on the flip side, it also offered everything else that fans of the base game could want. New Legion Arms and weapons. New boss fights that look as awe-inspiringly brutal as they play. What more could you want?

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

“Delivery simulator,” “walking simulator”, “UPS simulator,” “Empty world” – you can probably lobby all these complaints and more at Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. However, the actual experience is a massive leap over the original in every possible way, with environmental hazards, new enemy types, more varied firearms and better structures, leading to vastly expanded approaches. If nothing else, the story is both much more emotionally resonant and chock-full of Kojima’s weirdest ideas (and dance numbers) yet.

11 bit studios' sci-fi survival title has been available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC since mid-June and received extensive praise.

After multiple delays, 11 bit studios’ The Alters launched on June 13th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC to fairly strong critical praise. But how did it perform commercially? In a new tweet, the developer confirmed 280,000 sales across all platforms and a million wishlists on Steam.

Frostpunk 2, by comparison, sold over 350,000 copies in less than a week. While it seems The Alters performed much worse, it’s worth noting that Frostpunk as a franchise is more established. Of course, whether the sci-fi survival title recouped 11 bit’s development costs remains to be seen, so stay tuned for updates.

For more details on The Alters, check out our review. We gave it an eight out of ten, praising the unorthodox premise – Jan Dolski stranded on a hostile planet and forced to create alters of himself to survive – and visuals. Some gameplay elements, including resource-gathering, may not resonate for some, but the storytelling and choices make up for it.

Despite the positive acclaim, The Alters hasn’t been without controversy as players discovered the use of generative AI for a small amount of in-game text and localization.
The studio explained that it had always planned to get more appropriate localisation of the game done after The Alters was out.

After getting quite a bit of criticism with regards to the use of LLMs in the development of The Alters, developer 11 bit studios has released a statement through a lengthy post on social media platform X. In its post, the studio admits to making use of AI-generated assets during development on a temporary basis. “Our team has always prioritized meanigful, handcrafted storytelling as one of the foundations of our game,” posted the studio.

“During production, an AI-generated text for a graphic asset, which was meant as a piece of background texture, was used by one of our graphical designers as a placeholder,” the studio explained. “This was never intended to be part of the final release. Unfortunately, due to an internal oversight, this single placeholder text was mistakenly left in the game. We have since conducted a thorough review and confirmed that this was an isolated case, and the asset in question is being updated.”

The studio also wrote about the licensed movies that can be seen by the in-game Alters in the social area of the base. These movies were made for the game by an external team, and were added to the game late into its development. According to11 bit studios, there were “extreme time constraints” which led to the studio ultimately using LLMs for the translation work to get them done in time for the game’s release.

“It was always our intention to involve our trusted translation agencies after release as part of our localization hotfix, to ensure those texts would be handled with the same care and quality as the rest of the game,” wrote the studio. “That process is now underway, and updated translations are being implemented.”

The studio also explained for some context that, of the game’s entire narrative layer, the movies accounted for around 10 thousand words out of the 3.4 million across all languages in the game. This translates to around 0.3 percent of the total amount of text in the game.

“The alternative was to release those specific dialogues in English only, which we believed would be a worse experience for non-English-speakers,” explained the studio. “In hindsight, we acknowledge this was the wrong call. Even more so, no matter what we decided, we should have simply let you know.”

The fact that The Alters made use of AI-generated text in some of its translations was spotted by players just last week. One player had also noticed some background text in the game that included prompts that one would typically feed into an LLM to get results.

“Seriously, leaving parts of an AI prompt in the lockit?! Talk about spitting in the face of your international audience,” wrote game localisation specialist Lucile Danilov about the use of AI in The Alters. “According to the OP, some parts of the [Brazilian Portuguese] translation are also riddled with errors and inaccuracies, which is appalling considering how the whole game revolves around an intricate narrative.”

The fact that 11 bit studios ignored Steam's policy of disclosing the use of AI and LLMs in the store page is also being called out.

While the recently-released The Alters has been quite a successful title, especially when it comes to its critical reception, the game has now been the subject of quite a bit of criticism because of some discoveries in its files. Players have noticed that The Alters has seemingly made use of LLM-based AI for a host of different things, from the generation of some portrait icons, to even some localisation.

One player has even noticed that there is quite a bit of background text that essentially includes prompts one would typically feed to an LLM (large language model) to get some kinds of results. Another player noticed that some of the Portuguese localisation of the game has seemingly also been done using an LLM.

“There’s more damning evidence in-game, even, but it’s all background stuff that you have to go out of your way for,” posted one player. “There’s text crawls where you can still see the AI prompt responses before it produces a bunch of science jargon.”

What makes this especially noteworthy is the fact that developer 11 bit studios has made zero mention of using LLMs. Steam, especially, requires developers to inform potential buyers whether or not a game made use of AI tools in some form or another during development, and the Steam page for The Alters makes no mention of this.

“Steam requires developers to disclose AI use for a reason,” noted one player. “We have the right to know what we’re buying. If you’re going to use AI to create content, be honest about it instead of trying to hide it.”

Loc’d and Loaded’s game localisation specialist Lucile Danilov has provided her own thoughts about The Alters and its seeming use of LLMs for localisation. In a post on LinkedIn, Danilov wrote about how, while it’s a great game, the fact that AI prompts were left in the game is a “disgrace”.

“Seriously, leaving parts of an AI prompt in the lockit?! Talk about spitting in the face of your international audience,” wrote Danilov. “According to the OP, some parts of the [Brazilian Portuguese] translation are also riddled with errors and inaccuracies, which is appalling considering how the whole game revolves around an intricate narrative.”

Video game translator Handong Ryu responded to Danilov’s post by revealing that the Korean version of The Alters has also suffered from a similar fate.

“Unfortunately, the same issue exists in the Korean version as well, which makes it more likely that the second scenario you mentioned is closer to the truth,” wrote Ryu. “While no AI prompt has been exposed, I can confirm that the same section of the Korean localization shows clear signs of having been run through an LLM without proper editing.”

“There has been significant backlash from the Korean gaming community, and it has been really disheartening to witness, especially since the criticism stems from a part of the game I had no control over.”

The sci-fi survival title has received strong acclaim from critics. It's available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC alongside Game Pass.

11 bit studios’ The Alters is available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 after multiple delays, and it’s received a positive critical response. Check out the latest trailer below, highlighting the most notable impressions from various outlets.

Jan Dolski is the main character and, well, many of the supporting characters. Set on a hostile planet, players must manage a moving base by creating different versions of Jan, known as Alters, with unique skill sets. However, they also carry unique memories and personalities, which means not always seeing eye to eye with the original (or each other).

Players must thus satisfy their needs while spending resources to improve the base and keep it moving. Researching new technologies, providing better food, and adding new facilities (and accompanying Alters) is also a must.

It’s a satisfying twist to the survival genre, even if the gameplay portion of gathering resources isn’t as exciting. Check out our review for more details – we gave it an eight out of ten.

11 bit studios' long-delayed sci-fi survival title is finally upon us. How does it measure up to the studio's best? Find out here.

Conversations with yourself can be difficult, especially when they’re standing right in front of you on a hostile, lonely planet where the sun is an ever-present danger. There’s room for honesty, appreciation, and maybe some unnecessary glad-handing…except when there’s not because the not-you happens to differ from the other.

If it sounds confusing – and at least somewhat tantalizingly exciting – then welcome to The Alters, 11 bit studios’ newest title and one that requires as many people skills as resource and time management. To no small end, of course, given the exciting premise, story-telling, characterization and tough choices, though it can sometimes get a little dry on the gameplay side.

The premise revolves around Jan Dolski, an employee of Ally Corp who embarks on a mission to find Rapidium. Eventually, he lands on an unknown world with rain, lava, and anomalies that could potentially represent the junction between parallel worlds – the usual. Except he’s the only one alive. The rest of his crew are dead for unknown reasons. Upon arriving at the base for the operation, Jan scrounges up some resources and even discovers Rapidium but fails to get it moving. The only option? Create an Alter using the Rapidium, one with the necessary skills to find a solution.

"Their different lifestyles mean they won’t always get along with each other – or you, for that matter. Decisions arise that will require siding with one Alter over the other – providing quality meals for a select period or sticking to the usual mush is only one example."

Clones in science fiction are nothing, but The Alters handles this very differently. Using Mind Records, the base’s Quantum Computer activates branching, where you can view the lives of different Alters based on key decisions made. The Engineer, for example, would have stood up to Jan’s father and stood by his mother, eventually developing a knack for machinery that makes him more efficient in such matters than Jan. However, the Scientist opted for a different path that provided a fundamental understanding of Rapidium, which resulted in no shock upon seeing Jan after awakening.

While each Alter has more or less the same body as Jan, their minds are completely different. It goes a step further when considering that their memories exist as lives that haven’t happened yet. Flipping through the Mind Records is a good way to bond with and understand your Alters – you’ll learn very quickly that the Scientist favors a no-nonsense, emotionless approach, above all – but conflicts will inevitably arise. What happens when you create an Alter that wants to reunite with Lena, Jan’s wife, even though they’re currently separated?

Things get even dicier considering the circumstances of the mission and Ally Corp’s agenda surrounding the Rapidium. There’s also the mystery over what killed the crew during their landing, with the implications raising even more questions. It’s a testament to the story that it juggles so many threads and sustains interest in every single decision. Between survival, the moral implications of creating Alters, and Jan’s personal feelings, a lot is going on, but it never feels overwhelming from a story-telling stance.

The same can’t be said for your Alters, though. Their different lifestyles mean they won’t always get along with each other – or you, for that matter. Decisions arise that will require siding with one Alter over the other – providing quality meals for a select period or sticking to the usual mush is only one example. Alternatively, you can do nothing if you don’t mind disaster down the line. Each Alter has a different mind state depending on your responses and whether their needs are met, from frustration and motivation to anxiety and rebellion. Even selecting the ideal dialogue choice doesn’t guarantee they’ll walk away from a conversation feeling better in every single way.

"Alex Jordan is the star, obviously, rendering each Alter into a version that feels distinct yet, for lack of a better word, Jan-like. However, the other actors, whether it’s the awkward Lucas, Jan’s boss Maxwell or Lena, put in exceptional work."

Meeting each Alter’s needs also requires managing resources. Mineral and organic deposits abound on the surface, but first, you need to find them, build mining drills, and connect them to the base with pylons. Each drill also requires interacting to extract the resources, which costs the most valuable resource of all: Time. After 8 PM, you can’t exit the base or continue working or your efficiency drops the next day.

Socializing with the Alters is still an option, and while you could push them into overtime (echoing Frostpunk in some sense), it can have long-term consequences on their mood and well-being. Other notable aspects to manage include batteries to power the radiation shielding, drill charges for destroying rocks and opening up new routes, kits to repair any broken-down tech, and so on. You can divide up tasks for your Alters, letting the Engineer handle mining ores while you explore the planet and harvest other resources, which is ideal, though they could face injuries while on the job.

You’ll need the required modules to take care of them. Base building is much more straightforward but still challenging. You have a limited amount of space for different modules – most are freely rearrangeable, but ensuring that there’s elevator access is important (even for things like storage space). Expanding the base is an option after completing enough research (which also unlocks more efficient battery consumption, mining, refining, etc.), but more modules result in additional weight. And more weight means more organics required to actually move it, the same organics required for food. Better hope there’s enough stockpiled – but not too much, or work can halt in other places – to ensure you’re ready to get moving when the sun rises.

All this combined makes for a compelling survival sim that combines visual novel-like conversations with light resource gathering. Alex Jordan is the star, obviously, rendering each Alter into a version that feels distinct yet, for lack of a better word, Jan-like. However, the other actors, whether it’s the awkward Lucas, Jan’s boss Maxwell or Lena, put in exceptional work. It doesn’t hurt that the dialogue flows almost effortlessly as well – even if the tonal shifts can be a little odd in places upon choosing a less-than-ideal response.

However, the gameplay may not resonate with everyone. A good chunk of the experience involves running around and/or holding down a button to harvest resources. This is broken up when dealing with Anomalies since you need to carefully walk around before finding ways to deal with them, but even those who are into survival crafting games will find The Alters limiting. Efficiency in time management – like creating a set of pylons en route to a potential mining spot rather than building a drill and then working backwards (since you can fast travel back to the base from a drill) or creating Alters to handle common tasks with more efficiency first – is the main focus. Some random events can occur as you progress further, but if you’re not a fan of exploration – which also isn’t the most mechanically demanding – then the backtracking and actual gameplay can prove repetitive.

"While The Alters isn’t breaking any boundaries, it offers a compelling story with great characters and exciting mysteries despite the more low-key gameplay portions and iffy visual issues."

Graphically, The Alters looks fantastic. Creating such a distinct look in the sci-fi space is challenging, and even if it evokes more of the familiar rather than blazing a trail, it looks incredibly good, whether it’s the various faces and expressions of Jan or the lava rivers flowing through the planet. Performance is also very good – setting everything to High and character model detail to Ultra while DLSS Quality is enabled at 1440p, offering a stable 60 FPS throughout, with the occasional drop. However, an odd issue occurs in close-up scenes, whether you’re taking calls or talking to an Alter, where the models become way more pixelated. This occurred seemingly at random, and despite improving past the first few hours, it does take you out of the experience, especially with how much you’ll be starting at one Jan or another.

While The Alters isn’t breaking any boundaries, it offers a compelling story with great characters and exciting mysteries despite the more low-key gameplay portions and iffy visual issues. I’m keen on more playthroughs to see what I’ve missed, but if the narrative reinforces anything, it’s that you’re always your best enemy (or worst friend).
