After multiple delays, 11 bit studios’ The Alters launched on June 13th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC to fairly strong critical praise. But how did it perform commercially? In a new tweet, the developer confirmed 280,000 sales across all platforms and a million wishlists on Steam.
Frostpunk 2, by comparison, sold over 350,000 copies in less than a week. While it seems The Alters performed much worse, it’s worth noting that Frostpunk as a franchise is more established. Of course, whether the sci-fi survival title recouped 11 bit’s development costs remains to be seen, so stay tuned for updates.
For more details on The Alters, check out our review. We gave it an eight out of ten, praising the unorthodox premise – Jan Dolski stranded on a hostile planet and forced to create alters of himself to survive – and visuals. Some gameplay elements, including resource-gathering, may not resonate for some, but the storytelling and choices make up for it.
Despite the positive acclaim, The Alters hasn’t been without controversy as players discovered the use of generative AI for a small amount of in-game text and localization. Head here for 11 bit’s response to the same.
