Monolith Soft's artist and producer Yasuhiro Fujita also spoke about how the role of the studio has expanded since Skyward Sword.

Monolith Soft is well known for its technical capabilities in game development, especially when it comes to making large open-world games with limited hardware. The studio has previously worked on a number of games, from the Xenoblade Chronicles series of RPGs, to Nintendo’s flagship titles like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. In a new interview on the studio’s official website, Nintendo’s general manager for The Legend of Zelda series, Daiki Iwamoto, spoke with Monolith Soft’s animator and director Yasuhiro Fujita about the two companies working together.

While the duo discussed several projects throughout the interview, one of the most interesting details came from Iwamoto talking about wanting to work with Monolith Soft again in another game in the Zelda series. He praised the studio as being a “strong partner” when it comes to making games in the Zelda franchise, and went on to say that they should “use the know-how we’ve developed by working together” to make a new unique title in the series.

“Monolith Soft is a strong partner when it comes to developing Zelda games from scratch,” said Iwamoto. “And more and more I would like to see them taking on a central role in production. Going forward, let’s use the know-how we’ve developed by working together, and the strength of the whole Monolith Soft team, to create a unique title in the series together.”

While this by no means serves as definitive confirmation that the next mainline entry in The Legend of Zelda franchise will be developed by Monolith Soft, Nintendo and the developer are quite likely already working on something new for the series in the background.

Elsewhere in the interview, Fujita also discussed the role Monolith Soft had played in the development of Zelda games, and how it has evolved since its work on Skyward Sword.

“Monolith Soft now has a larger number of developers, and the way we’re involved has changed,” said Fujita. “With Skyward Sword, the main relationship was that Monolith Soft would create the data in accordance with the game design and specifications laid out by Nintendo, but with Breath of the Wild, we’re more likely to ‘think and create together.'”

While the studio had been working with Nintendo for quite some time with the latter owning 96 percent of the studio as of 2011, Nintendo became a 100 percent owner of Monolith Soft back in December 2024. While this didn’t really change much since Nintendo was already the majority stakeholder in the studio, Monolith Soft now being owned 100 percent by the company likely means that it has more access to the internal infrastructure and support system that had already been set up.

In June, Monolith Soft had revealed that it wasn’t just working on Xenoblade Chronicles and The Legend of Zelda games. It had also provided support in developing Nintendo Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World. While details were sparse, the studio confirmed that Nintendo contracted it to work on the kart racer’s open world and character designs.

While Nintendo has released these photos, the company hasn't yet confirmed the casting for iconic characters like Ganondorf.

While the live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has kicked off production, Nintendo has released the first few photos to showcase what it will look like. The photos, which can be seen below, give us our first official look at Zelda – played by Bo Bragason – and Link – played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth – in full costume.

For the time being, Nintendo hasn’t revealed any other character or actor involved in the live action movie The Legend of Zelda. Rumours, however, have indicated that Dichen Lachman of Severance fame has also been cast in the movie, taking on the role of Zelda’s trusty aide Impa.

Nintendo had confirmed that Bragason and Ainsworth would be playing Zelda and Link respectively through a social media post from back in July. The post, made by The Legend of Zelda creator Shiegru Miyamoto, who also went on to reaffirm the May 7, 2027 theatrical release date for the film.

“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” wrote Miyamoto on social media. “I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”

On the production side of things, directorial duties on The Legend of Zelda are being handled by Wes Bell, with Miyamoto taking on the producer role. Bell has previously worked on a host of successful major films, including the Maze Runner trilogy as well as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

The movie was first confirmed back in November 2023, where it was revealed that Nintendo was working with Sony Pictures for the adaptation. As part of the deal, Sony Pictures is taking on most of the production work, while Nintendo will be handling the production of video content for the movie itself.

There has been little in the way of details revealed for The Legend of Zelda, but rumours from back in April have indicated that the film is slated to be the first as part of a planned trilogy. A narrative summary of the film was also revealed, which confirmed that it would cover all the major story beats that The Legend of Zelda games are typically known for, like Ganon being the main antagonist, the presence of the Triforce, and Link needing to solve intricate puzzles and explore treacherous dungeons to find sacred artifacts that can help him.

“The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness,” reads the summary. “The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

Bo Bragason has previously worked on movies like Censor and The Radleys, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has been in All Fun and Games.

Nintendo has unveiled some of the casting for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. In a post on social media, The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has announced that the role of Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason, and Link will be played by Evan Ainsworth.

Along with confirming the casting, Miyamoto has also reaffirmed the May 7, 2027 theatrical release date for The Legend of Zelda. However, no other details have been revealed so far.

“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” wrote Miyamoto on social media. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. “The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”

Originally slated for a March 2027 release, Nintendo had announced that the live action movie’s theatrical release would be getting pushed back to May. In a social media post, Miyamoto wrote that the cause for the delay came down to “production reasons”.

“It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be,” he wrote.

The Legend of Zelda’s live action film adaptation is being helmed by Wes Bell as director, along with Miyamoto as producer. Bell is known for having worked on the Maze Runner film trilogy, as well as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Nintendo was confirmed to have been working with Sony Pictures for a live action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda back in November 2023. While the company is working with Sony Pictures for most of the production work, it has also stated that it will be handling the production of visual content for the movie itself.

While no other details about The Legend of Zelda live action film have been revealed so far, a report from back in April indicates that there are plans to have a full trilogy of films made. The report comes courtesy of tracking data by Production Line, which indicates that three movies are set to be produced together between November 2025 to April 2026.

Production Line has also included a brief summary of what the film’s plot will involve, which indicates that the story will be staying fairly close to the plot of the original The Legend of Zelda on NES.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures announced earlier this year that their live action movie based on The Legend of Zelda would be releasing in March 2027. Now, a new release date has been announced for the movie, and it looks like the wait for it is going to be a roughly a month and a half longer than previously expected.

Taking to Twitter, Nintendo shared a message from Shigeru Miyamoto, who is also serving as a producer on the Zelda movie, announcing that due to “production reasons” the release date of the movie has been delayed from March 26, 2027 to May 7, 2027.

The entire trilogy is reportedly set to be produced together in New Zealand from November 2025 to April 2027.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures have remained awfully tight-lipped about their planned live action Legend of Zelda film since announcing it in late 2023, but new details seem to have emerged nonetheless.

Production Line – a production tracking website operated by the Film and Television Industry Alliance – reports that production on a planned trilogy of live action The Legend of Zelda films is set to begin later this year. The three movies will seemingly be produced together, with production scheduled to run from November 2025 to April 2026.

Interestingly, a brief narrative summary of the project is also provided, suggesting that the movie’s story will feature a number of elements that series fans will find familiar, including the Triforce, dungeons, and more.

The summary reads, “The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

The Legend of Zelda movie is being directed by Wes Bell (Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) with series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Venom, X-Men, Uncharted) serving as producers. As Nintendo recently announced, the movie will release worldwide on March 26, 2027.

The movie is being co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, and directed by Wes Bell of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fame.

Nintendo announced in November 2023 that it was teaming up with Sony Pictures to work on a live action movie based on The Legend of Zelda. We now know exactly when that movie is going to release.

Taking to the recently released first-party news app Nintendo Today (caught by VGC), the company announced that The Legend of Zelda will release in theaters worldwide a couple of years from now, on March 26, 2027.

As previously announced, the Legend of Zelda live action film is set to be directed by Wes Bell of Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fame. Avi Arad, best known for his work on Spider-Man, X-Men, Venom, Uncharted, and more, is also attached as producer.

Further details on the movie – such as casting or story details – are currently unknown, but it hopefully won’t be too long before that information begins trickling through. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

YouTuber PapaGenos tweets about Zelda being "severely overdue" as the main character in a title while hinting at it possibly happening.

Link has been the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series for decades. While the titular Princess Zelda would take on more active combat roles, she’s only been playable in spin-offs like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. That could change in the future, according to YouTuber PapaGenos.

He recently tweeted, “Tears of the kingdom Had a great zelda design I think we are Severely overdue for a game where zelda Is the main character. Seems to me A Hyrule adventure like that Is something fans want, Nows The time.” The capitalized letters are conspicuous, and when arranged, they spell out, “This is a hint.” Given the context, it could mean a new title starring Zelda is in the works.

Of course, whether this is a new mainline game, an expansion for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo previously announced no plans for DLC) or a spin-off of the latter remains to be seen. PapaGenos’ track record isn’t too shabby, having reported on Metroid Prime’s remaster shadow-dropping during Nintendo Direct. Take things with a grain of salt, as usual.

Regarding Zelda becoming a playable character in a new title, series producer Eiji Aonuma said last December that “there may be some sort of possibility” of the same in the future. Stay tuned for updates, especially with the next Nintendo Direct scheduled for June.

Rémi Boutin, senior game designer on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, hopes to be able to work on a Legend of Zelda game one day.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been a great critical success for Ubisoft, having drawn widespread acclaim for the way it has reinvented the franchise as a Metroidvania while also returning it to its sidescrolling roots. Members of its development team recently held an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, where Rémi Boutin, senior game designer on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, spoke about his desire to make a Zelda game.

When asked about popular external properties that he would like to work on someday, Boutin said he personally would “love” to work on a Legend of Zelda game, specifically mentioning that he’d want to make spinoff based on Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, which is the only sidescrolling game in the mainline Zelda series.

“Personally, I would LOVE to work with the Zelda IP. Maybe a strange spin-off based on Adventure of Link?” Boutin wrote, before also mentioning Castlevania as a franchise he would like to work with.

This is, of course, just one developer talking about his personal dream project, but given the fact that Ubisoft and Nintendo are no strangers to collaborating with one another using the latter’s biggest properties, a la the Mario + Rabbids games, a Zelda game made by the Lost Crown team would sure make a lot of sense. Stranger things have happened, right?

In our review of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “The Lost Crown is a fantastic game. Not only does it capture the biggest strengths of Prince of Persia’s earliest sidescrolling instalments, it also reinvigorates the series in spectacular fashion with its Metroidvania design structure. From level design to combat, from the platforming to its visual style, from the exploration to the soundtrack, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an impressive accomplishment in more ways than one, and one of Ubisoft’s best games in years.” Read the full review through here.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Nintendo announced in November that it was working with Sony Pictures on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

Nintendo announced in November that it had partnered with Sony Pictures to produce a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda (much to the surprise of the sizeable contingent of fans who had been expected an animated film), and at Sony’s recent CES 2024 press conference, we got the briefest of updates based on the movie.

Taking the stage, after a rundown of the many films and TV shows Sony has in the works (which includes season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, a Gravity Rush movie, and TV shows based on God of War and Horizon, among a number of other projects), Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida also mentioned the Zelda movie, speaking about what fans can expect from it.

“We’re also excited about another IP expansion – the adaptation of Nintendo’s game franchise, The Legend of Zelda,” he said. “This live-action film will deliver an amazing tale of adventure and discovery.”

The Legend of Zelda is set to be directed by Wes Bell, who is known for the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Recently, Bell said he wants the movie to be like a live-action Studio Ghibli film- read more on that through here.

Well, Mr. Aonuma, a lot of Zelda fans would gladly tell you how much they want a link to that past.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reinvented Nintendo’s premiere franchise as a massive open world experience that places little to no limits on players, and its follow-up, Tears of the Kingdom, pushed the series further in that direction. And though both games are obviously among the greatest games to have ever been made, there’s still a healthy contingent of the Zelda series’ fanbase that wonders whether the older, more structured, more linear design style of prior instalments is something that we’re ever going to see again.

If you fall in that group, you probably won’t like what series producer Eiji Aonuma has to say on the matter. Speaking recently with IGN, Aonuma talked about how emphasizing player freedom above all else and not demanding specifically prescribed progression has become central to The Legend of Zelda’s development strategy, calling the more linear experiences “games of the past”.

“Games where you need to follow a specific set of steps or complete tasks in a very set order are kind of the games of the past,” he said. “Whereas currently the games of today are ones in which that can accept a player’s own decisions and give them the freedom to flexibly proceed through the game, and the game will allow for that. So I’m in complete agreement with that as our design philosophy, but as the producer, I do have to admit making games that way always carries with it additional development costs. And that is something I have to think about.”

When asked specifically about the not insignificant demand for a Zelda game that goes back to the series’ more structured style from the pre-Breath of the Wild days, Aonuma once again questioned its merits in comparison to a much more open-ended experience, but added that he does understand that there’s nostalgia for the old style.

“I do think we as people have a tendency to want the thing that we don’t currently have, and there’s a bit of a grass is greener mentality,” Aonuma said. “But I also think that with the freedom players have in the more recent games in the series… there still is a set path, it just happens to be the path that they chose. So I think that that is one thing I kind of like to remind myself about the current games that we’re making.

“But also, it’s interesting when I hear people say those things because I am wondering, ‘Why do you want to go back to a type of game where you’re more limited or more restricted in the types of things or ways you can play?’ But I do understand that desire that we have for nostalgia, and so I can also understand it from that aspect.”

Of course, it’s worth acknowledging that it wasn’t that long ago that we got a more traditional Zelda game in the form of 2019’s Link’s Awakening remake. Perhaps another Zelda remake in the future could serve as a welcome window to the series’ past?

As for the next mainline Zelda game, while it’s obviously not going to roll around for some time to come, its developers have made it clear that it’s going to be something completely different from recent instalments (so don’t expect to see Ultrahand again), and that it won’t be a direct sequel to Tears of the Kingdom.
