Developed by panstasz and based on the works of Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft, World of Horror is a roguelite horror role-playing game set in Shiokawa, Japan. There are 14 playable characters and 20 investigations, with players solving puzzles and uncovering clues. Random encounters with fabled demons and figures also await, and each step brings you closer to the world’s end.

World of Horror’s 1-bit art style is also unique, akin to retro graphics while being drawn in MS Paint. If you’ve never interacted with the works of Ito or Lovecraft, beware – there’s a good amount of blood, gore and mutilation. At least the release trailer looks stunning. Check it out below.

World of Horror was originally slated to leave early access in summer. The game was first released as an early access title back in February 2020 on PC, and has since seen many updates over the years.

The game features a low-fi art style inspired quite heavily by the works of horror manga artist Junji Ito—known for his work on Uzumaki and other horror manga. The game features five mysteries that are randomly generated from an overall pool. These mysteries are further divided into a series of random encounter, making sure that playthroughs are always different.

World of Horror also features a complete set of modding tools for the PC version allowing players to come up with their own horror stories by making use of the game’s general framework.

Darkwood

Despite having over 12,000 user reviews on Steam and good critical acclaim, Darkwood is still somewhat of a niche survival horror title. Its open-world structure changes during the day, presenting eerie characters and various secrets as you scavenge for materials. At night, nightmarish creatures roam, prompting you to fight for survival. It’s frantic and doesn’t provide too much guidance, but Darkwood is worth sticking with for its unique aesthetic and extensive lore.
