Joe Musashi takes on Dr Eggman, Goro Majima and Death Adder while exploring five new stages, each complete with new music.

There’s a powerful trio of enemies heading to Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, and the chances are you’re probably familiar with them already.

The Sega Villains Stage DLC is bringing Yakuza’s Goro Majima, Sonic’s Dr. Eggman, and Death Adder from Golden Axe to the game’s world via mysterious rifts that Joe Musashi is trying to close by the most obvious method: Defeating the source of their power. That’s going to lead to some memorable showdowns with the aforementioned characters, who are in a decidedly different element than what we’ve come to expect.

There are five new stages aside from the three bosses, alongside new music tracks inspired by them. Aside from two Boss Rush modes featuring the new threats, there’s a trio of ninpos and skins each to round things off. We were very happy with the base game last year, and there’s no reason to believe that the DLC is going to be any different. It’s time to let your katana sing as you side-scroll through some chaotic fighting against familiar yet formidable opponents,

If you’re still on the fence, perhaps watching Joe take on an assortment of its new additions in the launch trailer below can help you decide if you’re diving in right away.

Life in Castor Woods isn't any easier in the new update, but it's certainly going to play better as you take on its challenges.

Dying Light: The Beast’s Restored Land just received a hotfix that’s addressing a bunch of issues that could be interfering with your time in Castor Woods. Whether you’re new to Kyle Crane’s explosive return to the franchise’s center stage or learning to master the game’s unique parkour system, this is an update you want to pay a little attention to.

That’s because it’s bringing a long list of balancing changes to systems governing your hunger (like reducing the drain while sleeping) and recovery from it alongside other changes like nifty new additions to vendor shops, legendary upgrades for DLC weapon blueprints, and some clever changes to you inventory management that ensure you don’t miss out on new gear thanks to a shortage of space in your inventory and stash. The complete list, which you can check below, showcases Techland’s determination to ensure Restored Land is as close to perfect as it can be for its players.

For our part, we were quite happy with what the update has brought to the table, its new modes and other additions making the game feel fresh enough to warrant another playthrough.
Partake in Escalation missions, which become progressively more difficult, to earn Prototype Gear equipped with unique Augments.

While its Anniversary event was a nice way to celebrate The Division 2’s tenth year, its latest season, Rise Up, could be even better. Now live on all platforms, it introduces Escalation, a new endgame difficulty. Available to those who finished the campaign and hit level 40, it currently applies to main missions and Strongholds, and can be found in the Base of Operations next to Countdown.

Escalation offers ten tiers of difficulty, each with different Mutators and Modifiers. Alongside harder challenges, there are also no checkpoints by default and a timer. Escalation Tokens are required for attempting the higher tiers, though you can obtain some by completing the same missions. But fail a mission, and those Tokens are gone forever.

What kind of Mutators can you expect? Well, there’s Harvester, which regenerates an enemy’s armor and health while they deal damage; Suppressor, which charges an EMP when an enemy takes damage; Anchor with its damage resistance and free incendiary rounds to foes; and more. This all sounds vaguely like Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts, so surely there must be some worthwhile rewards, right?

That’s where Prototype Gear comes in. As a new rarity, it includes higher stat rolls (which are up 1.5 times the previous maximum) and Augments, including Echo, which grants a chance for a bullet to repeat its damage; Amalgam, with a chance for each bullet to apply random statuses; and more. They’re not guaranteed from Escalation Missions, but higher tiers offer better drop chances alongside other rewards.

For even more details on what Rise Up has to offer, including brutal new Kill Squads which can drop Exotic Blueprints, head here.

In a statement, French consumer protection body UFC-Que Choisir called Ubisoft's actions in revoking player licenses 'unacceptable'.

While Ubisoft revoked player licenses for the original The Crew all the way back in April 2024, the act continues to haunt the company. According to French publication 20 Minutes, the company has become the target of a new lawsuit by consumer protection association UFC-Que Choisir. The lawsuit was announced on March 31st, and revolves around Ubisoft’s “deceptive” business practices and “abusive terms” with regard to The Crew.

The lawsuit was filed with the Créteil court, and the consumer association has said that it is (via machine translation) “unacceptable that Ubisoft considers, in its general conditions, that players only acquire a ‘license to use’ the game which would then be revocable at any time by the publisher.” UFC-Que Choisir’s lawsuit is being backed by Europe-wide consumer initiative Stop Killing Games. UFC-Que Choisir lawyer Brune Blanc-Durand called the case of The Crew “a particularly clear legal case study,” in a statement to the AFP.

Ubisoft is no stranger when it comes to lawsuits regarding the 2014 racing game at this point. The company had already been the subject of legal action in the US state of California, alleging that Ubisoft had violated consumer protection laws in the state. A lawyer for the company argued that there wasn’t a case, since the plaintiffs didn’t have ownership of the game.

“Frustrated with Ubisoft’s recent decision to retire the game following a notice period delineated on the product’s packaging, Plaintiffs apply a kitchen sink approach on behalf of a putative class of nationwide customers, alleging eight causes of action including violations of California’s False Advertising Law, Unfair Competition Law, and Consumer Legal Remedies Act, as well as common law fraud and breach of warranty claims,” wrote Ubisoft’s lawyers in a statement.

CEO Yves Guillemot was asked about the Stop Killing Games campaign, having caught on quite a bit and getting well over 1.4 million signatures. He called the subject of games being killed off an industry-wide issue.

“Regarding the petition, we operate in a market,” Guillemot said about the petition. “And, whenever we release a game, we provide a lot of support for that game. We also provide a lot of services to make sure that the game is accessible and remains playable 24/7.”

He also pointed to the company’s standard terms of service, which state that “Ubisoft may cancel access to one or more specific online features upon a 30-day prior notice.” Along with this, he noted that there was plenty of “information regarding the game and how long the game can be played”. At the same time, Ubisoft had put The Crew 2 on a massive discount, which Guillemot called “a one-Euro fee proposed to all buyers of the game. For just one Euro they got to buy the next version.”

“It’s not a whole lot of money to be able to continue playing a game,” he said.

“But this kind of issue is not specific to Ubisoft,” continued Guillemot. “All video game publishers are faced with that issue. You provide a service, but nothing is written in stone and at some point the service may be discontinued. Nothing is eternal. And we are doing our best to make sure that things go well for all players and buyers, because obviously support for all games cannot last forever.”

The remastered version was originally released on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U back in 2016, and brought improved visuals.

Publisher THQ Nordic has announced that Darksiders Warmastered Edition is making its way to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 19th. The title will be released in digital and physical forms, and will be priced at $29.99. Interestingly, there is no word yet on whether the remaster of the 2010 action adventure title will be making its way to Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement was made with a trailer, which you can check out below.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Darksiders Warmastered Edition won’t really bring anything new with them since the remaster’s 2016 release across PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U. As such, the trailer gives us quick glimpses at the ruined Earth that serves as much of the game’s primary setting, as well as a few of the several combat encounters that players will get to fight their way through.

Darksiders puts players in the shoes of one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, who also happen to be survivors of a legendary war between heaven and hell. The protagonist, War, is accused of having started the End War too early, before the Seven Seals were broken, and has been tasked by the Charred Council to hunt down those truly responsible for kicking off this war. War’s siblings – Fury, Strife, and Death – couldn’t help him out at the time, since they were busy with their own stories, as could be seen in other Darksiders games.

War, as one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, travels to Earth in his hunt for those responsible for the End War, which in turn leads to him coming face-to-face with various archangels as well as denizens of hell.

While primarily revolving around hack-and-slash combat, the original Darksiders was also quite inspired by older The Legend of Zelda titles like Ocarina of Time, complete with “dungeons” where the player could unlock new tools and weapons which often had to be used to solve puzzles and gain access to further parts of the game.

The announcement of Darksiders Warmastered Edition coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S comes less than a year after THQ Nordic, along with developer Gunfire Games, officially announced Darksiders 4. While not too many details about the title have been revealed, one of the key aspects confirmed is that all four Horsemen will be playable, complete with the ability to play the entire title in co-op or solo.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S could be an indication that we are going to see more Darksiders 4-related news in the coming months. While THQ Nordic is yet to make any confirmation, we could also see the other three titles – Darksiders 2, 3 and Genesis – making their way to modern consoles as well.

Gunfire Games is known for its work on Remnant: From the Ashes and Remnant 2, which showcased the studio’s experience with co-op modes and challenging gameplay. The team is also already familiar with the Darksiders universe thanks to it being founded by David Adams, who worked with many of its other developers at Vigil Games, which was the studio behind the original title.

A new persistent world mode with scarcer resources encourages a far more methodical playstyle but that's only the start.

It’s been quite some time since Dying Light: The Beast‘s original September 2025 release date, and many of us have already spent plenty of time in the game’s fantastic open-world. While developer Techland has provided plenty of post-launch support with a number of free updates, there hasn’t really been much of a reason to return to the game… until now. The studio surprised just about everyone by announcing, and shortly afterwards, releasing the Restored Land update for Dying Light: The Beast, and rather than being just another patch that brings in maybe one or two new quests, the update has a lot more to offer.

Headlining the update is the eponymous Restored Land mode, which is meant to be a new way to experience Dying Light: The Beast all over again. When enabled, the mode introduces a way for players, once more taking on the role of Kyle Crane, to restore Castor Woods to something at least a little closer to its former glory. Zombies killed in Restored Land mode won’t ever respawn. On the other hand, resources you’ve already looted won’t come back either, which introduces an interesting double-edged sword. That means you have to be much more careful when moving through any given area. Sure, you can eventually clear out a place well enough so that zombies can’t ever come back. But at the same time, you also end up losing the easiest way in the game to get your hands on basic resources like crafting materials: the zombies themselves.

The balance is skewed even further against the player thanks to resources being a lot more scarce, and repeatable activities that often tend to be a great way to grind out more materials can only be completed once. When it comes to actually playing through the mode, these limitations create some genuinely great moments where I had to stop and think through my next moves. Sure, I could always use some extra crafting materials, and I was certainly strong enough to take on a certain Dark Zone. But then I had to ask myself: “Do I really need those materials right now, or would I be better off waiting instead of draining my already-limited flashlight battery?” Restored Land mode, for all intents and purposes, turned Dying Light: The Beast—otherwise a pretty fun power fantasy—into a much more cerebral experience.

While the update also added more ways to ramp up the difficulty, like a One Life mode that results in permadeath, I chose not to use them, since I was already having a hard enough time trying to survive as it is. I haven’t finished a full Restored Land playthrough yet, so I can’t really comment on the usefulness of the rewards, but doing so will likely take me much longer than my first playthrough, since it encourages a slower pace thanks to resource constraints. I did find the act of taking out all zombies in an area quite rewarding, however, and it was a lot of fun to take a leisurely stroll through these zones without having to worry about anything. My only real complaint with the whole experience was the fact that co-op—one of my favorite features of the game overall—isn’t available in Restored Land.

"When it comes to actually playing through the mode, these limitations create some genuinely great moments where I had to stop and think through my next moves."

The update also brought with it one of my favorite new side-activities—Roadkill Rallies. Strewn around the more open parts of Castor Woods, the Roadkill Rally activity revolves entirely around your driving skill and rewards you based on how many zombies you can run over from point A to point B. While simple in concept and execution, Roadkill Rallies become a fun way to compete with friends on a leaderboard. And as an added cherry on top, you don’t have to be playing in Restored Land mode, which also means you can take on Roadkill Rallies in co-op.

Aside from Restored Land mode itself, the update’s meatiest additions are a host of new event-based side quests. Rather than seeking them out on the map and making your way to them, however, these new quests tend to pop up depending on the area you’re passing through and what route you’re taking. These new quests largely revolve around telling small stories about what might have happened to nearby survivors. The studio has noted that these quests were added in an attempt to “make the journey between main quest moments more engaging,” and I think these new quests achieve that quite well. They feel like a natural part of your journey as you parkour or drive your way through Castor Woods, and can often add to the sense of place that the setting has always excelled at.

What helps even more is the fact that these quests don’t even tend to be particularly long. They tend to be relatively simple affairs, often revolving around a single fight or a couple of conversations before you return to your journey. They can be quite varied, ranging from a simple inter-faction battle over a truck full of useful resources, to finding new outposts set up by the Baron’s forces. These aren’t really meant to tell any deep and emotional stories on their own. Rather, they act more like quick encounters that help flesh out the world of Castor Woods, and their relatively dynamic nature also has the added benefit of making the open-world game feel more alive.

"These new quests largely revolve around telling small stories about what might have happened to nearby survivors."

I’d also be remiss not to mention the many improvements Dying Light: The Beast has received through its extensive post-launch support. My favorite of these has been the added depth to the parkour systems. Rather than making any single, sweeping change to the traversal, however, the studio instead added a range of smaller improvements through additional animations that are only really obvious to those who may have already spent some time with the game. This has resulted in on-foot traversal generally feeling a lot smoother. Additions like Legend Levels for level-capped players also provide more excuses to just hang around in Castor Woods to take on some of its tougher challenges.

Generally speaking, Techland did some fantastic work with Restored Land, breathing new life into the already-fantastic Dying Light: The Beast. Thanks to the plethora of new content, new players have plenty to sink their teeth into, while those of us who had already considered ourselves “done” with the game have a great reason to come back: its headline new mode for fresh playthroughs. The new event-based side quests also offer some fantastic new opportunities for environmental storytelling depending on how you approach them and where they appear, and Roadkill Rallies are yet another great way to make traveling between faraway points more interesting.

When it comes to PC performance, Dying Light: The Beast already ran very well, and Restored Land hasn’t slowed it down one bit. With most of the visual settings cranked up to max, I was able to maintain steady frame rates of well over 60 FPS while playing at a resolution of 2560×1440. This was on an upper-mid-range PC featuring an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, a Radeon RX 7800 XT GPU, and 32 GB of RAM.

Castor Woods just got a whole lot deadlier, and you're going to have to bring your A-game to the table if you want to survive.

Dying Light: The Beast Restored Land Edition is out now, and it’s bringing so many new additions to the original title that are sure to shake things up for those of you who managed to beat the game when it released last year.

Kyle’s going to have to be very careful in this new take on the Castor Woods, as resources are now rarer and more pricey, while an optional permadeath mode can make even the slightest mistake very costly indeed. However, it’s not as bleak as it looks, as high-risk areas remain blissfully clear of zombies once you take them all out, which applies to zombies out in the open world as well. It’s going to be a chaotic yet rewarding gameplay loop, and if you already own a copy of the game, it’s available as a free update.

This is an edition we would recommend without hesitation, as we found the base game to be quite the entertainer and a worthy sequel to its predecessors. The new edition seems like it’s additions are all meaningful changes that can build on an already excellent gameplay loop to take it to new heights.
How does Crimson Desert compare to one of the greatest of all time from Rockstar Games? Find out in our comparison.

As Crimson Desert was more exposed over the past two years, comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2 inevitably emerged. Not for nothing, because the latter is still, to this day, one of the greatest games ever made and a significant benchmark for open-world immersion and storytelling. So while it’s certainly superior in numerous aspects, how close does Crimson Desert get to matching it? Which areas are completely different and unique? Let’s dive into it, starting with…

Open World Structure

One of the ways Crimson Desert shines is in its overall variety of environments. Not only are there forests and plains that channel The Witcher 3, but it’s mixed with the sheer verticality of something like Breath of the Wild, and that’s only the starting area. Delesyia feels more elegant yet mysterious; the titular Crimson Desert – far from its sandstorms and desolate flats – is packed with technological developments, and the Abyss itself defies description with its various floating islands. Red Dead Redemption 2 offers many of the same environmental conditions and biomes, but with much less verticality or imaginative surroundings, so we’ll give the nod to Crimson Desert for this one. The latter also feels more like a “journey” in terms of how you’re gradually progressing, going from outright nothing to grander scenarios.

World Cohesion vs Abundance

However, there’s a dilenation between the two that’s difficult to ignore. Pywel is absolutely packed with activities and sights, mixing high fantasy with medieval times and steampunk technology. Red Dead Redemption 2’s environments are fictional, but they’re influenced by real-world locations at the dawn of the 20th century, where technology is slowly yet surely developing, and civilization is snuffing out the outlaws. One is more extensive and voluminous; the other feels more cohesive and grounded. It’s ultimately up to the player, although I would go for Red Dead Redemption 2. That cohesion is important, and the realism intertwines with the reactivity and characters to make it feel all the more alive.

Immersion vs Friction

Each game has its own kind of friction – something that pushes back against the player for different purposes. In the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s getting to the more methodical controls and various systems that define Arthur’s life. It takes some time to fully acclimate to because it’s all in service of a different way of life that no longer exists. Yet everything is gradually rolled out while still feeling immersive, gradually drawing the player into its world and storytelling. Unfortunately, despite the strong opening cutscenes, Crimson Desert feels awkward in its sudden transition to Pywel while constantly dumping new systems and complex controls on the player. There is still friction in understanding how the world works, but you feel less immersed when having to remember all the controls and their different scenarios.

Exploration Payoff and Progression

If you enjoy discovering new things at an organic pace, both games are recommended, but as you’d guess, there is a catch. For Crimson Desert, it’s in finding potential new mechanics, advancing faction quests, maybe happening upon bizarre puzzles, or engaging in combat for the sake of Abyss Artifacts, resources, and potential loot. Red Dead Redemption 2, on the other hand, is more about the various stories inherent throughout the world. There are mysteries to unravel, characters with their own detailed backstories and needs, and multiple steps that either advance that subplot or lead to unique scenarios. Throughout all of this, the writing is top-notch – something which Crimson Desert lacks in spades, and the fact that some quests or discoveries don’t always feel as rewarding relative to the effort required is also annoying. I would go with Red Dead Redemption 2 in this case but it can honestly depend.

However, in terms of actual progression, Crimson Desert falters due to the sheer stinginess in certain resources. The fact that you need to spend Abyss Artifacts to upgrade gear and weapons at a fairly early point also dampens one’s excitement, especially when obtaining new items and trying to level them up enough to obtain some numerical advantage.

Combat Philosophy

Controls aside, combat really is where Crimson Desert shines, between its combos, weapon transitions, elemental enhancements and plethora of gear with unique effects. Despite significant overlap in skills, Oongka and Damiane also offer their own intriguing playstyles, whether you prefer a berserker or a melee caster hybrid. And though there are some quirks that I didn’t like – the camera during boss fights, for instance – the overall responsiveness and feel is enough to have you wanting another skirmish as soon as possible. Red Dead Redemption 2 is more down-to-earth, both in terms of weaponry and actual mechanics. It’s visceral up close and tactical from afar, which suits the era and the story it’s trying to tell. But even if it isn’t as complex as Crimson Desert, it takes significantly less time to feel comfortable with the controls.

Mission Design and Player Freedom

As mentioned previously, Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a vast spread of memorable tales. There are plenty of instances in the main missions where you have to stick to the objective or risk instant failure, but the freedom in approaching other content is pretty surprising. Even more so is how the game reacts if you do things differently – simply because the development team had the foresight to anticipate that. Outside of combat expression – like pummeling a boss with broken pillars – and maybe basic traversal, Crimson Desert doesn’t really offer much freedom in terms of its objectives or side content. Perhaps if there was more room for nuance in their objectives or interesting tales that facilitated multiple approaches. At least there’s very little restriction on where you can go, and being able to back out of boss battles whenever you want is a nice touch.

Story and Characters

No debate here: Red Dead Redemption 2 is the clear choice. The story of the Van der Linde gang, particularly of the bond between Arthur and Dutch, is so masterfully crafted that it remains one of gaming’s best. And that’s without getting into all the other memorable characters interwoven throughout, including that whippersnapper John Marston and the indomitable Sadie Adler. There’s an emotional pull throughout that’s backed by incredible writing, even if the pacing can be a little too gradual for some.

Crimson Desert lacks all of this, sadly. Sure, there are flashes throughout, but Kliff is as bland and mostly unexpressive as they come, and the actual plot feels rudimentary and lacking in any emotional weight.

AI and NPC Design

In the same vein, the non-playable characters inhabiting the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 feel alive. Almost all of them have a full 24-hour schedule, and while they might be as super-nuanced as you’d expect, it goes a long way towards convincing you that they’re actual people. Meanwhile, in Crimson Desert, despite how the AI can behave in combat (archers constantly trying to maintain distance and melee fighters not waiting their turn to attack), its characters are nowhere near as believable. Maybe if the majority had more than one line to spout while doing anything.

Traversal Mechanics

You’ll spend a good chunk of time on horseback through Pywel but it’s not the only option by far. Kliff can glide, unlock different kinds of mounts with unique properties – including the much-touted dragon – and even use a mech to wreak havoc on his surroundings. The fact that Damiane and Oongka have their own unique ways to traverse environments is also notable. Red Dead Redemption 2’s more grounded approach means that Arthur will rely on horseback, stage coaches and trains to get around. It’s more grounded, yes, but Crimson Desert wins in terms of sheer options.

Visual Fidelity

Despite its age, Rockstar’s magnum opus is still one of the best-looking games of today. Environments radiate with details while character models animate realistically, both in movement and facial expressions. The fact that it goes beyond what’s immediately apparent, incorporating various subtleties and nuances, is also a key element of its appeal, whether you’re in the middle of a heist or simply taking in the sights on horseback. Crimson Desert also looks quite good, especially with its environments, weather conditions and sheer variety. Those long rendering distances and level of detail are also nothing to sneeze at, but it falls short when it comes to animations, especially in cutscenes and dialogue interactions.

System Depth vs Elegance

At the time of its release, Red Dead Redemption 2 received significant attention for the sheer number of things that players could do. However, it was all for immersion: Shaving Arthur’s beard and maintaining his appearance to garner the respect of townsfolk, the drawn-out process of skinning prey for that more rustic feel, the list goes on. Crimson Desert offers a much more extensive feature set with its MMO-lite systems, reputation that serves as currency, sieges, expeditions, camp development, and whatnot. The problem? Not all of it feels as rich or coherent. Heck, some features feel like they’re just there to be there – see the fact that you can steal stuff and commit crimes, but it has no actual effect on Kliff’s morality or character or even on how the world views him.

There’s enough to like, but in terms of overall well-roundedness and polish, Red Dead Redemption 2 gets the nod once more.

Conclusion

When analyzed individually, Rockstar’s masterpiece remains as strong as ever. Crimson Desert does stand out in certain aspects, and others can feel a lot more subjective, especially when it comes to the kind of world that players want to explore. Competing against a legend like Red Dead Redemption 2 is no easy feat. However, at least the developers behind Crimson Desert tried their hardest while cramming a dozen other influences.

Following the final content update in 2023, Sega may be preparing a new version of the successful open zone 3D platformer.

With Sega confirmed to be attending tomorrow’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase, it’s interesting to note that Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition has been rated by South Korea’s GRAC. As discovered by Gematsu, it was seemingly approved last month.

Of course, neither Sega nor Sonic Team has officially confirmed this, nor have they hinted that a Definitive Edition was in the works. After launching in November 2022 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, the 3D platformer received three major free updates in 2023, including The Final Horizon, which added nine new Cyber Space levels and a new challenging final boss.

Aside from potentially offering new content, this could mark the title’s debut on Nintendo Switch 2. Time will tell, but an announcement tomorrow wouldn’t be surprising.

Sonic Frontiers is far from the only major success that the franchise has seen in recent years, with Sonic X Shadow Generations launching in 2024 and going on to sell over two million units. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was released last year and sold over one million units relatively quickly, but Sega Sammy CFO Koichi Fukuzawa says it fell short of internal projections.

It continues to receive updates, though, with Mega Man out today for paying players. Goro Majima from Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Red from Angry Birds will be added for free in April, followed by Puyo Puyo’s Arle in May.

Gameplay producer Robby Williams noted that "what comes next is very hard and painful" for the 1,000+ affected by the lay-offs.

In light of the recent massive lay-offs hitting Epic Games, affecting more than 1,000 employees due to a downturn in Fortnite, those still working at the company have offered their own thoughts on the event. Among those affected by the lay-offs include Fortnite design director Christopher Pope, principle engineer Evan Kinney, and lead writer Nik Blahunka, who confirmed this through social media posts.

Gameplay producer Robby Williams described the event as “a brutal day at Epic,” noting that “what comes next is very hard and painful” for those affected by the lay-offs. On the subject of now having to make do with a team that is now smaller by around 1,000 developers, he said that the crew will have to “pick up the pieces and try to keep moving forward.

“Our teams will have to pick up the pieces and try to keep moving forward,” wrote Williams on social media, “but we cannot even fully understand what kind of impacts this will have on the game for the rest of the year and likely beyond.”

“I’ll continue to do my best to keep making the best game for you,” he continued, “and I’m confident that my peers feel the same, but please be patient with us as we navigate this tough time and do our best in spite of these truly gut-wrenching losses.”

In announcing the lay-offs, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeny said that the company was “spending significantly more than we’re making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded. This layoff, together with over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles, puts us in a more stable place.”

As for the future of Fortnite, Sweeny said that the company will have to focus on offering players “awesome Fortnite experiences with fresh seasonal content, gameplay, story, and live events.” He also said that Epic Games has to work on its developer tools “with greater stability and capability as we evolve from Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN to Unreal Engine 6. And we’ll be kicking off the next generation of Epic with huge launch plans towards the end of the year.”

The lay-offs were far from the only things coming about at Epic Games in light of Fortnite seeing a downturn. The company is also shutting down three popular game modes available in Fortnite: Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage. The modes will be shut down in a staggered manner, with Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage being on their way out in April, and Rocket Racing remaining live until October 2026.

“We’ve built a lot of Fortnite modes, and in some cases, we failed to build something awesome enough to attract and retain a large player base,” said Epic Games when it announced these shut downs. “We are going to shut these modes down on the schedules outlined below – we’re grateful for everyone who played.”

What the future holds for Fortnite might seem murky for now. However, Epic Games likely has plans already in place. The company’s partnerships with others might also play a role, like the deal it had signed with Unity to bring in the latter’s game engine capabilities into Fortnite.
