During the company’s financial conference for the last fiscal year, Take-Two’s Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick shared his perspective regarding the possibility of a new PlayStation release by Sony in 2020. Zelnick also commented on the importance of the PC as a platform for video games.
When asked whether what his opinion is about a potential new PlayStation (PS5) release in 2020, Zelnick pointed out that the company has handled transitions from one console generation to the next pretty well in the past. While there may be some challenges during such a period, the company has managed to do well by creating “the highest quality properties that defy proper behavior in console transition periods.” Zelnick also points out that the company did really well during the transition from the PS3 to PS4. He pointed to Grand Theft Auto V as an example of how high quality games will continue to perform well even during such transition phases. However, he made it clear that is not his place to comment on another company’s plan, which makes sense.
Zelnick then went on to talk about how the PC has become very important for the company’s business due to the growth in digital distribution. He also stated that in the future we may get to a point where the industry can be platform-agnostic. Regarding this, he stated, “Does that mean that the business is flattening out, everything becomes open, and we don’t care what brand is on the box? Not in the least. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of more generations. However, it does get us closer to a point where we truly can be platform-agnostic as an industry. I would say that we’re not there yet, but that day will come.”
