If you have been following the PlayStation 4 ever since its reveal in February this year, then I am sure you must be extremely pleased with Sony’s decision to include 8GB of GDDR5 RAM in the PlayStation 4. We have had almost countless developers here at GamingBolt praising Sony’s move to include 8GB of fast memory which tops out at 176 GB/sec.
But Sony never revealed how they were actually laid out on the PlayStation 4’s motherboard. In a exclusive video released by Wired, Sony engineering director Yasuhiro Ootori tears down the PlayStation 4 revealing that the 8GB of memory is actually divided into 16 modules of 512 RAM which surround the CPU on both sides of the motherboard. Personally, am not sure what purpose this will serve but it might be possible that even if one module fails the other fifteen modules will keep the hardware up and running.
I highly suggest watching that video in full as the engineer gives us a very deep look into the PlayStation 4’s architecture including the unified CPU and GPU.
PlayStation 4 launches November 15th in North America and November 19th in Europer.
