The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Tops NPD’s May 2015 Sales Chart

Sets record for best first month sales among current gen console RPGs.

CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the top selling title in the United States for May 2015, according to the NPD’s latest financial report. It set a record for the best first month unit sales among RPGs on current gen consoles. This arrives shortly after the news that the game sold 4 million copies across all platforms within its first week of launch.

Previous month’s best seller Mortal Kombat X dropped to second place followed by Grand Theft Auto 5, Minecraft and Splatoon. The NPD only keeps track of physical retail sales so it’s a given that overall successes in the United States will be higher with digital sales factored in.

Interestingly, though there was a 13 percent drop in software sales for May 2015 compared to the same period last year, the NPD says that, “Collectively, May 2015 launches sold 55 percent less dollars than May 2014 launches. However, catalog games outside of the launch month sold 3 percent more dollar volume compared to catalog games in May 2014.”

“Despite poor comparisons to May 2014 releases, eighth generation consoles software unit sales rose 8 percent in May 2015, and also gained 15 percentage points in overall software unit share to total 54 percent.”
