Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Graphics Quality “One Step Closer” to Film

Lead character artist Frank Tzengi talks about the increasing quality of game graphics.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4 continues the studio’s tradition of pushing the limits of realistic character models and visuals. Lead character artist Frank Tzengi believes that the overall quality of visuals in games is coming close to matching that of films.

Speaking to CG Master Academy (transcribed by Gamepur), Tzengi said, “Game quality is really close to film right now, look at the stuff we do in Naughty Dog.

“This character can easily be a digital double in a film. Based on the quality, the detail, the blend shape, the colour, everything that we put on the character this is basically a film character to me. So to me, videos games are getting really close to film quality, and this is exactly what I wanted to do.”

As for Uncharted 4, Tzengi said that the jump to PS4 allows for more polygons and high-res maps. “Making more expressions, making more blend shapes and wrinkle maps.

“All of this is getting us one step closer to the film quality that we wanted for the game industry and I think in a few years we can definitely get there.”

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is out later this year for PS4.
