Valve’s Gaming Hardware Steam Box Will Ship Without Windows 8 – A Report

New information from a German website.

It seems we have a lot more information on the supposed Valve’s Steam Box and according to a German site Golem.de, the console will be released this year.

It is also said that it will be Linux-based and won’t be running on Windows. It’s also a bit logical because Microsoft won’t give them a license to Windows because it will become a direct comeptitor to the Xbox, so it looks likely that it will run on Linux, which was also confirmed by Valve engineer Ben Krasnov.

He also said that there will be a lot of new products that will be revealed. The article is in German but we have a proper translated version.

“The Hardware Lab also has a few secret projects that will be published in 2013. We have a good group of electronic and mechanical engineers, and we look forward to “build some cool stuff,” he said. (via GC)

The console is said to be released in 2013 and may be released at E3 or GDC. Valve has said that they aren’t too fond of Windows 8 and will push Linux a lot because they don’t like monopoly too much. This news should really not come as a surprise as Gabe Newell has been pretty critical about Windows 8, calling it a catastrophe for PC Gaming. His statement was further supported by Sports Interactive and Serious Sam 3 developer who states that Gabe Newell’s statement was not an over-reaction.
