Xbox Series X Can Resume Games After Reboot

Quick resume will also work when resuming from standby.

Microsoft recently revealed a number of specs for the Xbox Series X, confirming the long-rumored 12 teraflops of GPU performance it possesses. It also revealed that it could suspend multiple games and start them without any issues. However, this feature seems to work even after the console is rebooted.

In a recent podcast, Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Microsoft’s director of programming on Xbox Live, talked about the feature. “I had to reboot because I had a system update, and then I went back to the game and went right back to it. So it survives a reboot.”

The feature will work even if you’re resuming the console from standby. It’s unlikely to have much impact on always-online titles since they require a constant server connection and will often quit if that’s severed. But the convenience of just pausing and switching off the console rather than worrying about save points is nice.

The Xbox Series X releases this holiday season. Microsoft will be present at GDC 2020 next month with a panel on that seems to discuss dedicated hardware-accelerated audio. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
