Many people were wondering if you will be able to sit down while playing various Kinect games, the answer to that is yes, but when it comes to lying down and playing, the answer is no.
According to Blitz Games CTO Andrew Olive, who is working on The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout game, the team found out that there are various issues when lying down and playing using Kinect.
For example while doing push-ups, the Kinect camera can’t recognize the skeletal frame of your body, it can only do it while you are standing.
“We had to consider, would this skeletal tracking ever realistically be able to work out that a player is laying on the floor, we asked – believe me we asked – and we were told it wasn’t going to happen,” said Olive.
Oliver says that Kinect could alternatively detect push-ups using the player’s silhouette outline using the bar’s visual camera, so they were able to create their own detection method.
“You don’t need to rely on the system, you can write your own [detection routine] if you know what you’re looking for,” he said.
But when it comes to sitting, Oliver said, “If you want to design a seated experience, you can design a seated experience.”
