The new Media Create report for video game hardware and software in Japan is now out, and as we all know, Nintendo ended up dominating on the hardware and software front last week, as it often does. However, in all the news about Nintendo-mania, one rather notable milestone that the PS4 managed to hit was lost.
You see, last week, the PS4’s lifetime sales in Japan hit 7,023,541 units- which means it hit the 7 million units sold milestone in the country, four years and six months after it originally launched there (the Japanese launch of the PS4 came a few months after the global launch). It’s an impressive milestone in its own regard- while the PS4 is barely outperforming the PS3, with far less competition (the PS3 had to go against the Wii, DS, and PSP for most of its life, if you will remember; the PS4, just 3DS, Vita, and Wii U), and is rapidly ceding its lead to the Switch, it’s managed to do well, given its nature as a stationary home console in Japan.
Now to see how long it takes it to hit 8 million. Meanwhile, on a worldwide front, the system has been performing just as impressively, having crossed 82 million units in shipments recently, with the entire PlayStation family of hardware having crossed the whopping 525 million units milestone.
