While its release is far too recent to have explicitly influenced the development of any games that are out currently, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a seminal game that will probably have reverberating impact on game design for years to come. But while we wait for a move towards systemic open world gameplay that it pioneered on its scale, we can at least appreciate smaller details in games that pay homage to it.
For instance, apparently, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey includes an Easter egg reference to Breath of the Wild. Discovered by Kotaku, the Easter Egg involves a puzzle involving a formation of rocks with one missing, which has to be placed at a certain spot for the puzzle to complete. Intrepid Hyrule adventurers will probably recognize this as a Korok Seed puzzle, which indeed this seems to be paying tribute to.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches on October 5 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but a Switch version will also be available in Japan that will leverage streaming tech. Similarly, Google will also make Odyssey playable in the Google Chrome browser on Friday, as showcase for its Project Stream streaming tech. You can read our review of the game here.
