Astral Chain Not Planned as Part of Trilogy, Director Clarifies

Director Takahisa Taura clarifies that he's thinking about the ways "that it can be expanded into a trilogy or more."

Yesterday, it was reported that PlatinumGames’ Astral Chain would not have downloadable content. Instead, director Takahisa Taura told IGN Benelux that it was part of plans for a trilogy, with the first game’s success dictating whether further sequels would be made. Taura has now clarified on Twitter that this was a mistranslation.

“This article reports that [Astral Chain] is ‘being created as the first part of a trilogy,’ but that’s wrong. I said that I’m thinking about various ways that it can be expanded into a trilogy or more.” So for now, you can think of Astral Chain as a strictly standalone affair. PlatinumGames’ approach for sequels isn’t always easy to discern but if the first game were successful enough, it would make sense to expect a follow-up.

Astral Chain is out on August 30th for Nintendo Switch. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where creatures from another dimension are attempting to corrupt the last dregs of humanity. As part of a peace-keep force, players team up with familiar-like Legions to battle these foes. You can check out some extensive gameplay of the title here. An overview trailer (albeit in Japanese) is also available here.
