As we get closer to the upcoming beta tests for Battlefield 6, DICE producer Alexia Christofi has revealed details about how the game’s cross-platform multiplayer will work. In a series of social media posts, Christofi has confirmed that enabling crossplay on the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions of the upcoming shooter will prioritise crossplay with other consoles before expanding the pool the eventually also include PC players.
“It’s crossplay on or off – but if crossplay is on we treat it as console preferred crossplay, so we’ll try and matchmake you with others playing on the console before falling back to full crossplay if we can’t find you a match with only/mostly console players,” wrote Christofi. Responding to another question about whether switching on crossplay will instantly prioritise both consoles or if the matchmaking pool will start out for the same system before then including the other, she replied by saying “Console no matter if PlayStation or Xbox!”
Currently, EA has not yet confirmed whether the crossplay will also have some level of prioritisation to ensure that players making use of a specific control scheme in Battlefield 6 will be matched with other players using similar controls; for example, whether controller users will be matched more often with other controller users. The official FAQ for Battlefield 6 has stated that the PC version of the game will have support for controllers, however.
As for how joining an online match will work, the FAQ has also confirmed that, alongside matchmaking, Battlefield 6 will also allow players to use a server browser through the Portal option in the main menu. The company has also stated that browsing and creating servers through Portal will be “easily findable on the main menu of the game”.
Quite a few details about Battlefield 6 have been revealed since its big multiplayer reveal last week. Most recently, Christofi had revealed that the upcoming shooter will feature more than 40 different weapons for players to choose from at launch. With the company’s plans to add more content to the game through post-launch updates and DLC, the number is likely going to go up. Explaining further about the weapons system, Christofi has also said that each weapon will have some base attachments, but that players can also unlock and use more powerful ones as they climb up the progression ranks for the weapon.
The multiplayer reveal event last week showcased quite a few details about Battlefield 6, including the fact that the game will mark the return of the franchise’s class system. More details about other aspects, including the available maps at launch as well as the game modes available to players, were also revealed. Check out our coverage of the event for more details.
Battlefield 6 is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The company has stated that there are currently no plans to bring the shooter to the Nintendo Switch 2. The FAQ for the game also notes that there are no plans to offer support for the Steam Deck right now.
