Black Friday 2019 Saw Record Breaking Spending On Digital Games

Digital sales continue to rise.

Digital is on the rise in a big way throughout the gaming industry. Couple that with a similar rise of digital subscription services and you’ve got quite the storm brewing. It seems 2019 shows that well with a sharp rise of digital sales during the Black Friday holiday shopping rush.

As reported via GamesIndustry, the weekend that saw Black Friday run through to Cyber Monday saw record sales for digital games. Digital spending rose in general 9% year over year from 2018 with spending in F2P games bringing in a large sum of that with overall in-game app spending rising 13%. All of that equated to a staggering $4.36 billion record high of revenue for the year.

The gaming industry is changing, and it seems that digital is steadily taking over the market at a pretty amazing pace. While physical media will probably always have a place, it does feel like gaming is headed for a similar fate as the likes of movies and music where it’ll become secondary to digital.
