Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Developer Didn’t Expect Poor Switch Performance at Launch

Director Koji Igarashi says the teams are "working hard to optimize the Switch version."

ArtPlay’s Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has garnered strong critical acclaim from outlets since release. However, it wasn’t all good news – the Switch version suffered from severe performance issues. Though the development team has prioritized improvements to the Switch version, there’s still work that needs to be done.

Interestingly, director Koji Igarashi didn’t expect performance issues with the Switch version to be that bad at launch. Speaking to Game Informer in its latest issue, he stated that, “While there were concerns over hardware limitations, we didn’t expect it to be as bad when it was released. Unfortunately, a number of problems occurred that we didn’t foresee. With WayForward’s support, these issues are being addressed, and they are working hard to optimize the Switch version.”

WayForward Technologies also has its hands full with Shantae and The Seven Sirens (part 1 is currently available on Apple Arcade). It remains to be seen how quickly improvements can be made. Nonetheless, it’s good to see the development team acknowledging these issues and working hard to resolve them.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can check out our official review of the game here. In the same interview, Igarashi also spoke about hopefully developing more games in the series.
