After several weeks of rumors about a 2016 version of Call of Duty, Activision has officially announced they will indeed be bringing a new addition to the franchise this year. The announcement was made during an earnings call hosted by Activision president and CFO Eric Hirshberg.
While not mentioning Call of Duty: Ghosts at all, Hirshberg announced the return to the series by saying, in part, “This Q4 we will have a new innovative Call of Duty game from our award-winning studio, Infinity Ward, the makers of the Modern Warfare series.” This doesn’t necessarily mean the new game is going to be a continuation of the Modern Warfare series, the fact that he specifically mentioned that seems like it might be more than just a hint.
On Twitter, Infinity Ward made it clear that while the cat is out of the bag, it’s not all the way out of the bag yet and there is still some time before more details are going to be released about the game. The company said, “Now it’s official. Can’t wait to show you what we’ve been developing!,” without actually saying when they would be able to show off what they’ve been developing. It’s safe bet that whatever they make is going to have an audience, considering Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 managed to top the January 2016 NPD listings.
