Although Call of Duty: WW2 was sort of a return to the series’ roots, Activision’s Call of Duty franchise sort of strayed from the basics with last year’s Black Ops 4 yet again, thanks to the game excising a single player campaign, and placing the emphasis squarely on the Blackout battle royale mode.
However, this year’s Call of Duty game, which will be developed by Infinity Ward, will be returning to the series’ roots yet again. Speaking during their earnings call, Activision shared some details on what to expect from Call of Duty 2019–it will have campaign mode, it will have a huge multiplayer mode, and it will have some sort of co-op element to it (via Charlie Intel).
“[This year’s Call of Duty will have] entirely new campaign, a huge and expansive multiplayer world, and some fun co-op gameplay,” Activision President Rob Kotisch said about the game.
Activision also believes it’s the best Call of Duty game they have ever made, which you would think they say every year, but which, if I am not wrong, was last said for Black Ops 3 in 2015.
“I will say that the team that’s building this game for us in Activision is building what they believe the best Call of Duty we’ve ever built,” Activision’s CFO Dennis Durkin said. “And that team is certainly targeting growth even though we haven’t put it in our outlook in that fashion.
From remarks made by a former developer at Infinity Ward, it also sounds like this year’s Call of Duty will have a modern warfare setting, which is all good. Now Activision needs to just reveal it.
