In 2016, Infinity Ward released what is regarded as one of the lesser Call of Duty games. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was another science fiction Call of Duty game at a time when few wanted one, and while it had a well received campaign, its multiplayer was roundly criticized by the community.
But it does have its fans—Call of Duty even at its least popular is very popular, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that there are people who are fond of the game and what it attempted. That said, those fans should abandon any and all hopes of a follow-up, because speaking on Twitter, ex-Infinity Ward developer Robert Bowling said, in no uncertain terms, that an Infinite Warfare 2 will never happen. While he never got into the reasons as to why that might be, it’s not hard to guess—as mentioned, the game wasn’t very well received by the community, so it wouldn’t make much sense to follow up on it.
That said, Bowling did share that this year’s new Call of Duty game, which will also be developed by Infinity Ward, will be “modern”, as opposed to science fiction, which should make many fans who would otherwise have been worried of a relapse following Call of Duty: WW2 extremely relieved.
