Activision surprised absolutely no one by releasing the official trailer for Call of Duty: Warzone, confirming the free to play battle royale title’s existence and release date. Despite being separate from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it’s developed primarily by Infinity Ward and shares progression with the former. So what’s new in Warzone aside from the battle royale elements?
In a press release, Activision outlined some of the new mechanics. For instance, Cash is earned in a match and can purchase Revive Tokens for dead teammates, field upgrades, equipment and Killstreaks. Contracts are basically optional bounties and involve completing certain objectives to earn Cash, XP, weapon XP and loot. Perhaps the most interesting part about Warzone is the Gulag.
Instead of being dead when eliminated, players will instead travel to the Gulag and face other players in 1v1 Gunfight matches. Winner gets to redeploy (and other players can watch the action unfold). You can also purchase a Self-Revive Kit to come back to life and there’s a Squad Buyback option that can be used at different stations on the map.
Overall, Call of Duty: Warzone is looking like an interesting on the battle royale formula while sticking to the series’ core mechanics. It launches later today for Xbox One, PS4 and PC so stay tuned for more details.
