One aspect of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 that was talked about as much, if not more, than the game itself was the big reveal that Keanu Reeves was going to have major role in the game. It was a big moment, obviously, as Reeves is a major star and has become somewhat of an action and sci fi icon. But will he be alone in joining the game from Hollywood? You would think so, but some recent comments from the developer side leaves open the possibility that there may be more.
In an interview with VGC, Spokesperson and UI Coordinator for developer CD Projekt RED, Alvin Liu, spoke lot about the game. When it came to Hollywood actors being cast, he mentioned that they wouldn’t just go out to get anyone for a role in one of their games, something we’ve heard before.
“I will say that CDPR is a video game company first and it’s very important to us that the match works,” said Liu. “If it was a random celebrity that just wouldn’t work with our franchise, like Britney Spears or something, we wouldn’t pursue that opportunity. So for us, we pursue it because it’s a great match for the game and not necessarily because we want to accomplish some goal with reaching a different audience or anything like that.”
But it’s what he refused to say that really catches your attention, because when asked if Reeves was the only Hollywood talent joining the cast, Liu got very noncommittal all of a sudden.
“Uh… I can’t comment on that! You guys are going to have to wait and see.”
It’s interesting and definitely seems like it could be a tease. Worth noting that it does seem to contradict an earlier interview where Senior Level Designer Miles Tost said Keanu was the only Hollywood actor considered for the game. Of course, if you’re trying to surprise people, you’d probably avoid telling the whole truth. Is CDPR going to try and throw another Hollywood bombshell on us between now and when Cyberpunk 2077 releases on April 16th of next year? Only time will tell.
