CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a mainstream success, having sold over 10 million copies worldwide. However, their next game, Cyberpunk 2077, could possibly do even better. According to Stock Watch Poland, the brokerage house Vestor DM, in the same statement where they disclosed CD Projekt RED’s intent to make the upcoming game as polished as Red Dead Redemption 2, reiterated and doubled down on its belief that the game will sell 19 million copies worldwide in its debut quarter.
Selling 19 million copies lifetime would make it among the highest selling RPGs of all time; while it would be below Diablo 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it would still have sold in the vicinity of games such as Fallout 4, and far more than Dragon Age or Mass Effect games typically do. Selling that much just in its release quarter implies it would be selling far beyond any RPG, ever.
Given the popularity and goodwill CD Projekt RED currently enjoys thanks to The Witcher 3 and its excellent expansions, I could see the game benefit from a huge groundswell of anticipation and hype leading into its release. Assuming the final product ends up delivering? Well, nothing is stopping it from not only reaching 19 million units sold, but crossing far beyond it.
