Sony Bend is on the cusp of launching Days Gone, the open world survival zombie action game, which will also be their first console game in over a decade. But long ago, they were known for another IP that their name was practically synonymous with—Syphon Filter, the stealth shooter action franchise on the original PlayStation that still has a legion of fans clamouring for its return to this day.
It’s just one of many classic Sony IPs that remain dormant, and there are many who, seeing Bend move on to Days Gone, are probably on the verge of giving up hope of it ever returning. It’s been so long since we had a new entry in the franchise, after all.
However, speaking to Eurogamer, Creative Director John Garvin noted that there may still be potential for the franchise to return some day, saying “never say never” to the prospect.
“I really appreciate that question because I was a writer and a director on all the Syphon Filter games,” he said. “I love Syphon Filter but man we have been so focused on Days Gone but when this thing ships and I can relax… I’ll think about it. Never say never!”
Is this enough of a tease for you? Who knows whether it’s just the kind of quip you make in an interview, or if there might actually be some substance to it. For now, we can hope that it happens one day. Meanwhile, if you are interested in Days Gone, make sure to see Bend discussing how they reconciled the open world in the game with storytelling and narrative. It launches on April 26.
