Deep Rock Galactic Tech Interview: Xbox One X’s Biggest Strength Is In Its GPU

Ghost Ship Games' CEO Søren Lundgaard answers our questions regarding developing a game for the Xbox One and Xbox One X.

Deep Rock Galactic is a co-op that allows up to 4 players to take on the roles of space Dwarves as they work their way through procedurally-generated caves to collect valuable resources and fight off hordes of aliens. There are multiple classes to choose from as well which will offer players to experiment with a variety of playstyles.

The game will be released for the Xbox One and PC, so Gamingbolt reached out to Ghost Ship Games to learn more about the process of developing the game for the Xbox One X. All of these questions were answered by Ghost Ship Games’ CEO Søren Lundgaard.

"Using similar architecture makes it much easier for indies like us to target both the PC and the Xbox One and Xbox One X."

How much faster do you think is the Xbox One X compared to Xbox One? (If you have access to the PS4 Pro, can you compare it as well?)

The GPU is approximately 4 times faster on the Xbox One X which makes a big difference for people playing on 4K televisions. We have no experience with the PS4.

Do you think the Xbox One X can render graphically demanding games in native 4K?

Depends on the game, target framerate and the quality. Even high end PCs can have problems running games in 4k at Ultra or even lower settings.

"Since the Xbox One X biggest strength is in the GPU, its “relatively” easy to scale up resolution and other effects to take advantage of it, so its not difficult to take advantage of the extra horsepower."

Do you think that that performance gap is shrinking in part because consoles have become much more like PCs with their x86 architecture?

Using similar architecture makes it much easier for indies like us to target both the PC and the Xbox One and Xbox One X.

Do you want more people to play your game on the Xbox One X compared to the Xbox One?

We just hope that as many people as possible get to enjoy the game. We have worked hard to make it run well on all the xbox editions.

Do you think the cross compatibility mandate between the Xbox One X and Xbox One will hold back the former?

Since the Xbox One X biggest strength is in the GPU, its “relatively” easy to scale up resolution and other effects to take advantage of it, so its not difficult to take advantage of the extra horsepower.
