Destiny: Activision CEO Says They Got More Right Than Wrong

CEO Eric Hirshberg thinks that what they didn't have right at launch, they've managed to fix.

When Destiny launched, it was instantly one of the most popular games of 2014. While the title sold a ton of copies, there were plenty of people who felt the game fell short in a number of areas. In recent months, it’s become apparent that both Bungie and Activision are well aware of the game’s shortcomings and have worked and are working to improve the experience moving forward. Despite those acknowledged shortcomings, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg feels like the development team got a lot more right than it got wrong.

Sitting down for an interview with Examiner, the exec was certainly willing to admit mistakes had been made, but he also focused on the fact that when those mistakes were indeed made, his team and Bungie worked quickly to come up with a solution. “In terms of things we could’ve gotten better, I think everyone would agree that we could’ve gotten some of the story and dialogue down better the first go [around]. I think there have already been some improvements with the following content. It was a big, complex development with a lot of moving parts.” Hirshberg said.

The exec thinks that where the  team got things right is in the investment of the character. He believes Bungie absolutely nailed bringing the adrenaline rush of first person shooters into an MMO. Building on that, will be the next step of development for Activision and Bungie. The team has already said they believe the Taken King is an evolved version of what came before it, now we’ll just have to wait and see whether the team learns from its mistakes.
