Bungie came under quite a bit of fire last month when it admitted to having skill-based matchmaking in Destiny‘s Crucible mode despite denials (or miscommunication depending on your view) of the same since the launch of The Taken King. Though changes were issued to help prioritize connection quality over skill, Bungie admitted later that the current model is a mix of skill-based and connection-based matchmaking.
Reddit users continue to note issues with the same including how difficult it is playing with friends and the fact that the current model was applied to all Crucible playlists as opposed to, say, Ranked or Hardcore playlist like most other shooters. There’s also this post where players separated by thousands of kilometers are being matched together, which often results in laggy matches.
There’s also the fact that Treyarch famously incorporated skill-based matchmaking in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and reverted back to the original model within 24 hours due to hue and cry from players. Why hasn’t Bungie just bit the bullet and opted for pure connection-based matchmaking? You’ll have to ask them.
What are your thoughts on skill-based matchmaking in Destiny and how iffy it still is despite the changes thus far? Let us know in the comments.
