Destiny Rise of Iron Skipping Previous Gen Due to Content Constraints

Adding Rise of Iron to previous gen would have meant removing older content.

Why isn’t Destiny’s next expansion Rise of Iron coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 as all previous expansions have before? Technical limitations are the usual reason but there’s more to it than that.

After community manager David “DeeJ” Dague claimed to IGN that about 90 percent of the current player base was on Xbox One and PS4, he noted that adding new content would mean removing older content. While Bungie has infamously been known for making Strikes, raids and other missions from Year One irrelevant, these are still essential to the experience for new players. Removing said content would have also opened the developer up to criticism but it does want to significantly expand the game. Hence the reason that Rise of Iron will be on PS4 and Xbox One only.

That doesn’t mean the older generations won’t be supported and Bungie won’t be forcing PS3 and Xbox 360 players to upgrade. However, the desire to add on to the Destiny experience – especially since Destiny 2 is a ways off – has to also be considered.

Destiny: Rise of Iron is out on September 20th for Xbox One and PS4.
