It’s amazing how a small element of a game can actually define the entire franchise. Destruction, come to think of it, is only a small part in certain video games genre, but with Battlefield and DICE it becomes a different issue altogether. Just recently the first trailer for Modern Warfare 3 was revealed and it was no surprise that the destruction will be totally scripted in the game. So atleast DICE already has a one up against its biggest rival this fall: Modern Warfare 3.
However in recent video Battlefield 3 Art Director Gustav Tilleby has revealed that all destruction will not be dynamic in the game.
“We have the micro-destruction as we call it, which is basically objects that are around the player like cover and so on, you can blow holes through walls and stuff to open up new paths and move through environments,” he said.
“We also have the really big scale destruction like facades and stuff that can crumble and fall over, as well as set-piece destruction – which is more or less scripted, big destruction events.”
So there you have it from DICE itself. Not all destruction will be dynamic and that is understandable since you can’t really give the player a chance to destroy everything in the game.
