EA To Implement Self-Learning AI In Battlefield 5?

Impressive technology showcased by EA and DICE.

EA have put up a video that showcases a collaboration between DICE and their Search for Extraordinary Experiences Division (SEED), with the application of experimental self-learning AI in Battlefield 1. The video explains how they’ve experimented with inserting self-learning bots in the game and how they behave consequently.

The AI, as explained in the video, seems to have impressive basic skills as per the game’s requirements (shooting and movement, for instance), while its behaviour as per encouragements and directions laid out by the developers also seems to be impressive, with them going for health and ammo pick ups as and when they need them. The bots seem to be learning on the basis of trial and error and altering their behaviour on the basis of their experiences and what they’ve learned thus far.

However, the video also notes how the self-learning bots still have much to learn, with a snippet showing a bunch of them hilariously running around each other in circles. That said, it certainly sounds like an exciting prospect, as the video itself mentions too, and it seems encouraging that EA might be implementing this in future titles as well. Perhaps Battlefield 5? One can always hope, though it seems unlikely that DICE will have developed this technology enough in such a short span but you never know.
