Mass layoffs have been announced EA, with the company set to cut around 670 jobs, which is roughly 5% of its total workforce. EA has said that as part of its restructuring, it’s looking to pivot away from developing games based on license IP, but with a number of upcoming EA titles fitting that description, questions have been raised over what their status is.
At least two of them are confirmed to be safe. In a statement to GamesIndustry, an Electronic Arts representative has confirmed that its two upcoming Marvel titles based on Iron Man and Black Panther are still in development.
Iron Man is in development at Motive Studio, the team behind 2023’s Dead Space remake, as a single player action-adventure game. Being built on Unreal Engine 5, it is currently still in pre-production, and job listings have suggested it could have an open world setting.
Black Panther, meanwhile, is being worked on by the newly-established Cliffhanger Games, and will be an open world, single player, action-adventure title, purportedly touting expansive choice-and-consequence mechanics that will allow players to shape their own stories.
Reports had previously indicated that EA’s partnership with Marvel would also cover third game, though its status remains unknown.
Not all upcoming EA titles based on licensed IP have survived the culling, however. Respawn Entertainment’s single player Star Wars FPS has been cancelled.
Meanwhile, Battlefield studio Ridgeline Games has been shut down.
