The excitement for FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is palpable, even if the vast majority of interested players haven’t indulged in Dark Souls, Bloodborne or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Given the potential number of new players, tutorial pop-ups will thankfully be a thing, helping to familiarize one with the mechanics.
FromSoftware’s Yasuhiro Kitao told JagatPlay (translation via Google), “Yes, we did anticipate the data for gamers like this at Elden Ring. While we don’t know whether this system is well received or not at Sekiro, we do find features like pop-tutorials to be quite effective. It immediately taught how the unique Sekiro system worked, which even then, didn’t feel familiar to veteran Souls gamers. So we wanted to bring those same elements to Elden Ring, relying on tutorial pop-ups with images and text.”
In Sekiro, these tutorials couldn’t be access later so if there was any vital information you missed, then tough luck. This won’t be the case in Elden Ring. “We’re going to summarize this tutorial into items that gamers can access so they can reread it whenever they want.” How this will work remains to be seen but given the amount of lore that various items have carried through the Soulsborne series, it wouldn’t be difficult to facilitate.
Elden Ring releases on January 21st 2022 and will be available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Kitao also recently discussed the presence of Watchtowers, which players could discover in the open world and use to locate smaller dungeons. Legacy Dungeons were also confirmed to not have any level requirements, though certain equipment may be necessary to access them.
