Fortnite became the first game in history to allow for players across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, PC, and mobile to play together. It’s pioneer of cross platform play. And now, its developers Epic Games have announced that they will be releasing their cross platform play API for other developers to implement in their games in 2019, allowing more games to have cross platform functionality.
The service will be allowed for absolutely free for all developers, and they will be able to use it regardless of whether or not they use Unreal Engine, or Epic’s own store. Epic also promises that its implementations will play nice with any other technologies developers may want to add to their games. All in all, it’s a wonderful move, with what appears to be no catches attached, and should further help with the proliferation of cross platform play.
On the whole, between this, and the Epic Store’s announced policy of better revenue sharing, I have to give them a lot of credit for being so developer friendly.
