Final Fantasy 15’s 10 Million UnitsSold Goal Isn’t About Profit, But Ambition

'We've tasked ourselves with this huge objective.'

After ten long years, Final Fantasy 15 is almost here- the game, which started its life as Final Fantasy Versus 13, will be releasing on September 30 this year, on Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Naturally, for a massive game such as this, and one that has been in development for as long as this has, the costs involved were probably astronomical- so high that they would necessitate an absurd number of sales for the game to have been a profitable venture, right? Which is why no one batted an eye when news broke out some days ago that Final Fantasy 15 needed to sell 10 million units to be considered success.

However, it turns out that something may have been lost in translation– in statement issued to Famitsu, director Hajime Tabata tried to clear the air, and emphasize that the 10 million units sold goal was not about profit, but about the team’s personal hope and ambition for the performance of the title. “We’ve thought about what we need to do to achieve this number and tasked ourselves with this huge objective,” he said.

Final Fantasy 15 looks absolutely incredible, and after a very long time, I am seeing people actually look forward to a Square product- so maybe it can pull this feat off?
