Square Enix has a lot on its plate this month, with Final Fantasy 16 releasing for PS5. As perhaps the biggest game in the series, it’s getting demo with a recently discovered listing indicating it could drop soon. However, even with the focus on its next mainline sequel in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth updates have begun.
There could be several reasons, from a possible announcement at the Summer Game Fest showcase on June 8th to starting the hype cycle early. Whatever the case, journalist Imran Khan revealed on Patreon that Square Enix is “panicking slightly” over the pre-order numbers for Final Fantasy 16.
The numbers are reportedly tracking behind Final Fantasy 15, even with the sequel launching on fewer platforms. While it’s not a cause for worry, Khan speculates that the recent Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth details could be the publisher wanting to “remind people the next chapter of Final Fantasy 7’s Remake trilogy exists and give it more marketing time than they had planned.” Time will tell.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has no release date for PS5 outside the previously announced Winter 2023 window. Producer Yoshinori Kitase said that development is going “according to plan,” and Square Enix is “working on nailing down release date.” As for Final Fantasy 16, it’s out on June 22nd for PS5.
