The NPD Group revealed its latest data for video game hardware and software spending for April 2020. Total spending hit $1.5 billion, as per GamesIndustry.biz, which was 73 percent higher compared to the same period last year and a new record high for the month in history. Total dollar sales for tracked software came to $662 million.
Leading the charts was Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which also became the third best selling game year-to-date and is now the best-selling game of the year for PS4. It also set a new launch month record for the franchise in unit and dollar sales, surpassing Final Fantasy 15 when it debuted in December 2016. In second place was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which is the fourth fastest selling tracked release in US history when taking dollar sales for its first seven months into account.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which took the US market by storm in March, managed to rank as the third best-selling game for April. It’s also still the second best-selling game of the year-to-date and the best-selling title on Switch for the one year period ending April 2020.
