Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura recently spoke at length with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu about a number of things, and while the highlights of that interview were him talking about the Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts 3 and how the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake has progressed, he also spoke about a number of other interesting things. Nomura spoke about the constitution of the Business Divisions in Square working on different titles, and where his position is with respect to those and how he operates in light of that.
Nomura mentioned that Naoki Hamaguchi, who is heading up the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake, has been part of Business Division 1 “from the beginning”. Nomura mentioned that he himself is not part of Business Division 1, so the person in charge of all decisions regarding Remake is Hamaguchi, and not Nomura.
He then mentioned that by that same token, Tai Yasue is the point man over at Business Division 3, and then went on to say that this allows him to serve as a bridge between the two, while also meaning that he isn’t tied up with any specific division or project at any time. “I am sort of like a cross-sectional mercenary not tied to a Business Division,” Nomura said. “If I belonged to a Business Division, I would basically be working full-time at that Business Divison, so it’s a system that lets me take on various jobs, including requests from other companies.”
Nomura is currently working on Kingdom Hearts III. The RPG has been confirmed for a release in 2018 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Nomura also recently said that there might be a chance that the game also comes out for the Switch some time in the future. Read about it here.
