Last week we got a good break down of what to expect from the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy 7 through the game’s director, Tetsuya Nomura. We learned about the various events in the game that will be recreated via an interview from Famitsu that you can read all about here. But the magazine actually uploaded the interview with a few additional questions that addressed one issue fans will want to know about: Materia.
In the original game, Materia was the game’s magical and summon system in the form of orbs that you designated to slots for each character. While it’s been referenced, we weren’t sure exactly how it would translate to the new game. Well, according to Nomura, the system will function similar to the original, so fans will find it very familiar.
Some changes will be there, however. For one, the Materia you use will actually be reflected on your character in some form, so you can physically see which Materia you have equipped. Due to the overhauled combat system (which you can check out here), there will also be some new Materia to match the new mechanics (thanks to Twinfinite for translations).
Final Fantasy 7 Remake will release March 3, 2020 for PlayStation 4. It will be the first part in the multi-entry remake project.
