Fortnite Cross-Play Is One The Company’s Best Moments, Says Epic CEO

Tim Sweeney think it's a watershed moment for Epic, as well as the industry.

Tim Sweeney is probably one of the most controversial figures in gaming right now, or at the very least PC gaming, due to his heading of Epic Games and all the various firestorms surrounding their Epic Games Store. Stepping aside from that bomb, though, he managed to accomplish quite the feat last year with the company’s megahit, Fortnite, with its cross-play feature extending to every platform. He’s proud of that, and thinks it might be the company’s best moment.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sweeney discussed various things, including how much Epic has changed over the years, and the impact, positive and negative, of Fortnite. In speaking about Fortnite, he talked openly about the cross-play situation. While Fortnite wasn’t the first game to feature it, it was one of the first to break the wall to include Sony’s PS4, something that still is a rarity (cross-play between PC, Xbox One, Switch, and mobile are becoming common). He says it took a lot of negotiating on an international level, but he’s proud of it- and also tired.

[It was] an effort in international diplomacy,” he said. “Given the long-term rivalries, it was a series of contentious discussions. It was one of the greatest moments in Epic’s history. I was pleased and tired.”

Regardless of what one thinks of Sweeney, it was quite the feat, and hopefully will open up doors in the future. For now you can play Fortnite on all major devices, with cross-play supported between them all.
