Fortnite is the most popular game in the world. We know this. However, the scale of its popularity is often hard to fathom, so here’s an interesting statistic for you. According to Sung Chul Park, representative for Epic Games Korea who was speaking to Korean outlet Inven, and verified by VG247 in follow ups to the western branches of Epic Games, Fortnite now has 8.3 million concurrent players globally.
Let’s stop for a minute there to actually understand the meaning of that. That’s not how many people play Fortnite. That’s how many people play the game at once. 8.3 million players are logged in and playing Fortnite at the same time. There are games that don’t manage to hit that many players total, period. Fortnite has that many playing at once.
Of course, the game’s free to play nature, combined with the fact that it is available on literally every platform on the market, means that it has an incredibly broad reach. But for it to be able to sustain this level of popularity demonstrates that it has struck a chord with people that few games have managed to, ever.
