Despite the many protestations by The Coalition team working on Gears of War 4, the game continues to get called a survival horror. That has led the lead producer Rod Fergusson to once again try and make sure people understand that while they want the gameplay to be tense, this is not something that wanders into the horror genre.
“It’s not Survival Horror, I’m a big man with a chainsaw gun. I’m not walking backwards down a hallway, scared, right?,” Fergusson recently told Games Radar. One of the reasons people might have a problem separating the game from the horror genre is because the development team wants players to be scared.
“We want you to be afraid again. We want it to be [a situation where] one monster is something to be scared of. Not where it has to be ‘I need 30 monsters to be afraid’,” Fergusson added. This is also one of the reasons the game is said to be having a smaller scope than previous games in the franchise. If you are not able to get into the upcoming beta, you’ll be able to see the tenseness of the game this fall when Gears of War 4 launches exclusively on the Xbox One in October.
