George Miller Hopes to See Hideo Kojima Make a Mad Max Game

"But he's got so much fantastic stuff in his own head that I would never ask him," says the Mad Max creator.

Hideo Kojima’s love for film has manifested in many different ways over the years, including his many friendships with prominent figures in Hollywood, many of whom have ended up making appearances in his games. One such figure is celebrated director George Miller, who is not only providing his likeness for a character in next year’s Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but has also seen the release of his new film, Furiosa.

Speaking in an interview with Gamingbible at the premiere of his movie, Miller was asked about the possibility of a new game based on the Max Max franchise, in response to which he mentioned the 2015 title developed by Avalanche Software, and how though it wasn’t up to the level of quality he had hoped for (contrary to what the game’s many fans feel), he hopes to see a Mad Max game made by Hideo Kojima one day. Given the many projects that Kojima already has in the works, however, Miller says that’s unlikely to happen.

“We did have a video game made when we made Fury Road,” Miller said. “We’d been asked many, many times to do one, and it wasn’t as good as we wanted it to be. It wasn’t in our hand, we gave all that material to a company to do it. I’m one of those people that you’d rather not do something unless you can do it at the highest level, or at least try to make it at the highest level.”

“I’ve just been speaking to Kojima here, who came all the way from Japan,” Miller continued. “If he would take it on… but he’s got so much fantastic stuff in his own head that I would never ask him. But if someone like that were to take it on… because I couldn’t do it.”

Miller’s hopes to see a Kojima-led Mad Max game aside, given how much Kojima Productions currently has in its plate, it’s unlikely that that will happen anytime soon. 2025 will see the studio release Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, while beyond that, it’s currently also working with Microsoft on OD, and with Sony on Physint.
