Some people were somewhat disappointed with the output from Rockstar Games this generation. The games themselves were fantastic, but overall the company only released two titles this generation, with one of those being a port from the previous gen. It’s a stark contrast to their somewhat prolific work of the past. But there’s reasons for that, of course, such as the skyrocketing costs of video games. There’s also the huge amount of money that one can now make off just a few titles.
As announced via Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have collectively shipped an astonishing 150 million units. That’s unheard of for just two games, and even more incredible when you consider Red Dead Redemption 2 released less than 2 years ago. At last count, GTA 5 had sold 115 million units, and Red Dead Redemption 2 stood at 26.5 million.
Rumor has it that there’s some pressure on Rockstar to release games with greater frequently. But when you look at those numbers, and know that both of those games also have very lucrative online components, it’s hard to see them going back to the old ways. It’d be nice, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. In the meantime, if you’re one of the few who haven’t checked out either Grand Theft Auto 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2, they’re both available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
