GTA 5 Release Date Controversy Blowout: Sony Apologizes, Game Goes Gold

Digital pre-order file pulled from European PlayStation Store.

When Rockstar Games put up a digital pre-order for Grand Theft Auto 5 in the European PlayStation Store, the net was immediately awash in spoilers and leaks from the soundtrack to sound bytes and other assets being leaked.

Head of Communications at SCEE Nick Caplin has revealed that the digital pre-order file has since been removed. On the Official PlayStation Blog EU, Caplin stated that, “Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets. These assets were posted online.

“We have since removed the digital pre-order file from the PlayStation Store in Europe. We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content. GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we’re looking forward to a historic launch on September 17.”

Rockstar Games has since announced that Grand Theft Auto V has gone gold after noting its disappointment with the leaks and spoilers. It has since warned against the posting of spoilers on its official site, lest one’s posting privileges become revoked. GTA V will be released on September 17th for Xbox 360 and PS3 worldwide.
