As of now, more than 3.6 million copies of the Rockstar mega-hit, Grand Theft Auto V have been sold across the UK, putting it in prime position to become the best selling game of all time. On the day of its release GTA V generated a revenue of over $800,000, with figures surpassing $1 billion within 3 days. At 29 million copies sold, GTA V falls just short of the 34 million record set by Mario Kart Wii, but GTA V’s numbers are only increasing.
Largely due to the success of GTA V, the game market inthe UK pulled in a whopping total of £5.4 billion in video game sales, marking an overall 4% increase from previous years.
Entertainment Retailers Association director Kim Bayley said: “This is a stunning result after at least five years of decline. Retailers have invested hundreds of millions of pounds in new digital services and these numbers suggest the public is responding in their droves. New technologies have historically presented challenges to the entertainment business, but these results show how our members are helping music, video and games companies find new markets.”
