Helldivers 2 Developer Feels it’s “Gone Too Far in Some Areas” with Balance Changes

"It feels like every time someone finds something fun, the fun is removed," admits Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt.

With the PSN account-linking crisis resolved for Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2, players have returned to concerns about balance. It follows last month’s big update, which adjusted weapons, Stratagems and much more, but has been an ongoing conversation since the Railgun’s nerf.

Responding to a Twitter user about how the last few months of balancing have made the game “un-fun” and “basically unplayable,” creative director and studio CEO Johan Pilestedt said, “Hey, yeah, I think we’ve gone too far in some areas. Will talk to the team about the approach to balance. It feels like every time someone finds something fun, the fun is removed.”

Pilestedt also admitted it was “not a great feeling” to go from one weapon to another because of nerfs. How the developer will change its approach in the coming weeks (or months) remains to be seen. It recently released three new primary weapons – AR-61 Tenderizer, SMG-72 Pummeler and PLAS-101 Purifier – alongside the G-13 Incendiary Impact grenade and P-113 Verdict secondary with the Polar Patriots Premium Warbond.

Helldivers 2 is available for PS5 and PC (unless you live in the many countries where it’s now unavailable on Steam). Despite unpopular balance changes, it’s still “massive hit” on both platforms, per Circana analyst Matt Piscatella.
