Yesterday, it was reported that Square Enix Montreal’s next generation Hitman title was cancelled. However, recent tweet from Square Enix Europe provides some clarity without outright confirming whether the game is cancelled or not.
“@BossDooley the @Hitman series isn’t cancelled, there’s just been some confusion today over who is developing future games.”
Obviously, there are several things that can be drawn from this. Firstly, we will be getting future titles and the cancellation of this next-gen title indicates little more than a bump in the road for the series. Secondly, Square Enix Europe didn’t outright say the game wasn’t cancelled. If nothing else, development was transferred from Square Enix Montreal to IO Interactive, who worked on Hitman: Absolution and did a pretty good job of it.
Finally, could this be some indication that Square Enix Montreal will be working on something else entirely? Could the next gen Hitman be repackaged into a true sequel unlike the previous prequel-esque intentions? Let us know what you think below.
Update: Square Enix recently sent a statement to VG247 to clarify things.
“There’s a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion.
“IO Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise. We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year.”
