Given the massive global popularity of the Harry Potter IP, there wasn’t much doubt over whether or not Hogwarts Legacy would be a commercial success, even amidst controversies sparked by the transphobic views of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. And sure enough, the Avalanche Software-developed open world action RPG has got off to an impressive start with sales around the world since its launch last week.
As per GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring on Twitter, as per data for weekly digital sales of games in Europe, Hogwarts Legacy has managed to outpace the launch sales of a number of major releases in recent years. Its digital launch in the region is 56% bigger than what Elden Ring managed upon its launch last year. In fact, not counting FIFA and Call of Duty releases, Hogwarts Legacy has enjoyed the biggest game launch in Europe since 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.
The open world title saw a similarly impressive launch in the UK, with initial physical sales outpacing Elden Ring by 80%. It also hit Steam concurrent user count peak of over 879,000 upon release, which is the second-highest ever for a single player-only game on Steam.
Hogwarts Legacy is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. You can read our review of the game through here. It launches for PS4 and Xbox One on April 4, and for the Nintendo Switch on July 25.
